Do I need more juice? Mmm, juice.

So I'm thinking of upgrading to a GTX 460. I eventually want to SLI it, but I don't think I need to right now. Here's my current setup:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor 3.8GHz
9800 GTX SLI
Fatal1ty 550w PSU

I know I have enough for 1 GTX 460, but do you think I'll have enough to SLI it? I'm going to probably get a 1000w eventually, but I'd rather have the 460 first.

Thanks

A 1000W is waaaay overkill for that. Hell, it's overkill for what I have. You'd be better off with a quality 750 for your SLI 460s.

You're fine for a single 460 now. For a 460 SLI setup, you'll want to look into a quality 600-650w unit.

I was looking at a couple of power supplies, but now I just need to decide which I want. I want to be able to SLI my GTX 460's (they will be overclocked) while still having enough power for my overclocked CPU. I also want a little leeway just in case I upgrade anything else for whatever reason.

1000w - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171049

850w - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171048

750w - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139010

Those are the specific ones I'm looking at.

I'm getting a lot of different answers: I read that 750w isn't enough and that I should get an 850w, then I hear that 750w is plenty. I feel like I should just go with the 1000w, but I don't know if it's necessary.

A good 650w PSU can handle a "max performance" for a 460 SLI.

If you want extra power for the fun of having it, a 750w is the max you will need for this.

The power supply section on this site would be the place where you would get the best answers to this question but I would suggest a good 750 to 850 max if you only plan on running two GPUs. More than 850 is primarily for 3 or more GPUs.

Thanks for the quick replies! The only reason I didn't post it in the power supply section was because I remember I made this post so I decided to just respond with what I found out. I'll go make a post in that section, though.

Shoot, for only $30 bucks more for the 1KW unit vs. the 750W unit ($40 if you count the $10 mir, which if it was me, I'd never send in), it kinda seems to me like you might as well go all out and get the 1KW.

Although the 750W Corsair is probably a slightly 'better' quality unit, and has a bit better power efficiency (silver vs. bronze), it kinda seems like for only $30 more it's a no-brainer. You'd *really* never have to worry about needing another PSU w/the 1KW unit.

But if you don't do the 1KW, I'd get the Corsair. It's still total overkill for SLI 460's (pretty sure I've heard of people running SLI 480's on one of those ... which requires WAAAAY more juice), but it's a great unit at a great price.
