They're about the same performance wise at stock, but the 460 has more OC headroom (the 1GB model of course). So really it's up to what you want to pay and your preference between AMD and nvidia.

A couple differences you may consider important, the 460 bumps system power draw up about 30-50W more than the 6850 under load; but the 6850 produces a little more heat.

the 460 is actually 768MB,so I'm guessing the 6850 is a better choice.

lol, the 460 defintely does not have more OC headroom than the 6850. There are actually very few graphics cards at all that have more OC headroom than a 6850. The only one I can even think of is a pencil mod'd 5750.

That aside, they are very close for gaming performance. Get the cheapest one and OC the hell out of it. I own both cards, and they are both excellent.

I agree with damric on the 5750 part.. A Stock 5750 can run 900mhz no prob like my Gigabyte Rev 1 and Pencil Modded ones go crazy..

Both are highly Overclockable but I'd be happy with either..

The GTX460 comes in 1GB SE < 768mb < 1GB varieties. BTW, that is listed in order of strength

Also, this would have told you which card is stronger straight up: http://www.overclock.net/graphics-cards-general/502403-graphics-card-ranking-5th-time-last.html

I've heard plenty of people overclocking the 460 an insane amount over stock.
I know my 6870 didn't have a whole lot of headroom but I wasn't sure about the 6850; thanks for letting me know. What have you gotten yours to?

But yeah, the 768MB version lags behind the 1GB version and the 6850 a little

I can bench around 1030/1225 for single card, and 1010/1210 for dual cards (probably lower because of my crap PSU). There is someone that broke a Vantage record with an HD 6850 clocked to 1500 core.

Since 6850 stock clock is only 775MHZ, OC'ing to 1GHZ means 29% headroom. The reason the 6870 does not have much headroom is because it ends up about the same OC as the 6850, but has a much higher stock frequency.

My 5750 was stock 700MHZ, and OC'd to 960MHZ with pencil mod, for a 37% OC, but I've seen 1130 core on this forum and on HWBOT.

460's have descent headroom also because of low stock clock of 675MHZ, meaning an 850MHZ = 26%. Some lucky chips will go much higher though with the right voltage and cooling.

Only 3% slower than the Radeon HD 6850 at 1680x1050.
