No, they don't. Cheap motherboards in general won't have as much expansion as $100+ ones. You can find $150 LGA 1155 motherboards that have TONS of features, just like you can find AM3 ones that offer the same. For $60, you're not gonna get a lot of expansion or features from a motherboard

With that out of the way, the Athlon II X4 IS better than the Phenom II X2, but the Core i3 2100 is still better, unless you do heavy over-clocking on the Phenom, which is not something I'd recommend on a budget board. You can get a very good LGA 1155 motherboard + a Core i3 2100 for $187. Link

No. I wouldn't get the i3, if the x2 is marginally cheaper just get it! Hell, you might be able to unlock it too.

And in the event of a future upgrade, you can get an x6 and be good for awhile.

the i3 2100 is faster than the x2 even if it unlocks to a quad...

and by your logic he could upgrade to a i7 later on just as easy as u could with the x6

Price out the CPU/MOBO combo's. Unless you are on a tight budget and the cost savings allow you to significantly upgrade your other components (like afford a better GPU) you should choose the i3.

Is the Athlon II quad core 640 better than the Phenom Dual core?
A quad core should be way better, but not many games use 3-4 cores, but overall if you can get some quad in your budget, with about the same clock speed, do it.

On newegg.ca anyway, they are $5 apart

I'd definitely get the x4

the x2 is barely faster at stock and has L3 cache and can sometimes unlock to an x3 or x4 but no garrentee

athlon II x4 640 all the way, and it should OC better, I would think

Go over to the AMD forum and ask the experts there

Get the i3 if you can afford it after you put a motherboard into the equation.

If you cannot, then get the 555 BE. The i3 is faster, but it's also more expensive.

If you can unlock the 555 BE then you'll be even more happy. If you can unlock it and buy a motherboard thats AM3+ ready, then you're set.

Here's a good deal with the 555 BE:
GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-USB3 AM3+
AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE

$194.98 (Price might vary)

And for the i3 2100:
Intel Core i3-2100
ASRock H61M-VS

$191.96 (Price might vary)

At the same price point, obviously the i3 is better. Just consider if you want to go Bulldozer or an i5 later on. There are cheaper deals available for the 555 BE, just this is the only one I'd recommend for future proofing.
