Phenom 9850 runnin hot.

K, so this is wifeys WoW box. Asus M487A-5, Phenom 9850 of course, 2gb G. Skill 800mhz DDR2, EVGA GTX 260, Ultra 550watt PSU.

The problem is the thing idles at ~53c. 58-59c after heavy gaming.Heres the catch tho, it has an "upgraded" cooler. I put the stock cooler from my Phenom II 965 on it when i got liquid cooling.(it seems alot better than her all aluminum one, this one actually has a copper base and heat pipes etc.) I did undervolt the temps down to a 49c idle, but the power supply that was in it fried and I havent reset the bios up since it was replaced. The case is ventilated by two 120mm fans as intake outtake plus another mounted to the side panel to hit the video card. Do you think it is safe to just undervolt again and have max temps of ~55c or should I invest a little in a better cooler?

Buy a decent aftermarket cooler and sort the overclock/settings out in the bios.

Buying an aftermarket cooler is just silly since that CPU won't overclock very far at all anyway. Not worth the hassle, when he could just buy a faster chip that WILL overclock far for the same price as the cooler (Phenom / Athlon II x2).

You made the right choice by using your stock Phenom II cooler. Did you seat it properly, and apply fresh grease to it? Not too much grease?

You can of course continue to lower the voltage. That's no problem, and it WILL lower the heat. Just make sure you stress test it, just like we do with an overclock...to ensure that its stable.

It doesn't have to be a top of the line cooler to work well. Cooler will be cheaper than a new processor. Besides he will need a better cooler with a new cpu anyway. At least that's the way I'm looking at it.

I'd be more worried about your 965 + that 3+1 mobo + water cooling
It's going to take the blow if you don't swap out that unideal motherboard right away

Ever reliable xd

I'd say just get a cheap aftermarket cooler. The CM Hyper 212+ would work fine.
Or as pioneer said, check if the cooler is seated properly and you used the right amount of TIM.

If it's dusty, might wanna clean it out and see first. Lord knows how dusty my case gets, especially since I have no dust filters

I think that's a bit dramatic...

It could blow if you don't swap out that motherboard.

Perhaps, perhaps, I don't usually barge into threads like this that often anymore.

That said though it might also be the case with his wife's rig since the 9850 is also very TDP heavy (VRM heat spreads towards CPU and heats that up further). An aftermarket cooler or water cooling would actually make that situation worse, as it would remove all possible VRM cooling, and as such I don't recommend it. It may just be bad CPU mounting too; the 965 cooler is 125W ready and should cool the 9850 just as well as it cooled the 965.

The thing about his currrent mobo is that it is a 3+1 4+1, unheatsinked, on a 965, with water cooling (no VRM cooling whatsoever), likely OC'ed, and on an MSI brand board. With so many reasons for danger put together, the thing is most definitely bound to take the blow someday even if at stock speed (it's happened on mobos with similar VRM design from MSI many, many times).
