What is your maximum budget?
~$500

What country are you in?
USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Internet browsing, watching movies, playing ancient games like Transport Tycoon and Sim Tower

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
No, but I really like ASUS

What screen size do you require?
15" or more

What screen resolution do you require?
Not worried about it

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Refurb is fine, as long as the company has a good history with refurb products

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
3-4hours

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Old games (Transport Tycoon, Heroes of Might & Magic III, etc). These all have low-res settings. Gaming is not an issue.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
Win 7 (preferably x64)

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Nope!

How much hard drive space do you need?
50GB... (I doubt anyone makes a hard drive that small, except SSD)

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Nah

Is there anything else we need to know?

Yes, I just want something that is fast enough for these simple purposes, and reliable. My old toshiba has lasted through a tour in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Djibouti. I love it. But it's dying a slow and painful death.

I fully intend to buy an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (50GB) and use that as the primary drive. I want a computer that opens programs FAST and doesn't take 4 minutes to boot. That's it! biggrin.gif

Thanks for any advice!

500 is going to be a killer. you will spend more than that on the hard drive you plan to put into it. i highly doubt you will get anything from asus in that price range without going used or a dual core.

Today's newegg shell shocker from 3-6pm (PST) is a 60GB SSD (OCZ Vertex 2) for $99
biggrin.gif

SSD's aren't that expensive anymore.

About the processors, I don't really know much at all about notebook processor sets anymore... Perhaps you can enlighten me on the series that are available and what to look for? Again, I'm not gaming with the box, I just need semi-quick boot time and program launch
