Looking for a new mp3 player

Thread Starter
My 120 gb Zune has a broken lock button, if i can't fix it i'm going to need to get a new mp3 player. I don't really know whats out there anymore though. I'm looking for something with long battery life, a lot of space, and good quality. Nothing under 60 gb probably. Does anyone have any recommendations?

The cowon J3 is an awesome player, the menu system takes a little getting use to, otherwise it's great.

i've been looking at Cowon products, the only thing I see thats a problem though is most don't have a lot of storage space and only use flash memory. do they have any internal storage or do you have to use an SD card?

My Zune 120GB had the exact same issue. Don't worry, it's easy to fix. You will need to open the casing, though. For this you'll need a very thin razor blade and a credit card.

Just to avoid any problems, turn it off completely by pressing the Back button (arrow) and Down on the D-Pad for 5 seconds. Once it's turned off, do this:

Take the razor blade and carefully insert it through the gap in the top left to create a bigger gap until you hear the plastic clips open. Keep the razor in the gap just so it doesn't close. Next, take the credit card and insert it in the gap. Now slide it all the way down from the top left to the bottom. Do the same thing for the top right side.

By doing this, I was able to open it. When you open it, set the PHYSICAL lock button (the one inside the Zune) to unlocked position and try to turn it on. If it turns on, it means the external switch got out of place. Make sure you hold the external lock button with one of your fingers to the unlock position because, if not, it'll slide around. Holding it in the unlock position, put the casing back starting from the top until all the plastic clips clip.

Now, it's fixed.

thank you!! I'll have to try that when I get home tonight. just wondering though, was your lock button stuck or was it able to slide really easily? i've heard of both of these issues, mine slides really easily and can't be locked

I'm still tempted to get a new mp3 though, so if anyone has any recommendations i'm still open to them

I have stopped purchasing MP3 players and started using my smartphone or old smartphones.

You can grab a Samsung Omnia II off eBay for about $100. Why?

1) MP3/Video/WIFI/SRS and WOW HD Encoding (Sounds way better than any Zune Device)
2) Plays games and apps too
3) Super AMOLED Screen
4) Has an app that lets your stream files from your PC or transfer them from your PC over WIFI

I no longer use it as a phone. I have a Samsung Focus. The sound it so much better on the Omnia II. I have it in my car and use Garmin Mobile XT to Navagate and use the MP3 Player at the same time and through my head unit.

More hacks and apps too for a WINMO 6.5 Pro device.

Zune is being phased out or already is.

Yes, I had the same issue as you. The button was loose and I couldn't get it to lock. It's a pretty common issue. But yeah, it can be solved by doing what I did. Now I've used it for 5 months and haven't had the issue occur again.

No, Zune isn't being phased out. At least, not the Zune HD. There were some journalists that said Microsoft was discontinuing it and around a day afterwards a Microsoft Zune rep. said they weren't and that it was a misunderstanding. And I wouldn't think they'd phase it out. Sales seems to be pretty good. I see people with the Zune HD all time time.

I heard it on the news last month.

So, was that about the same time as what you heard? What a marketing nightmare! Someone is paying for that one!

Yeah, I heard it when it was reported on Engadget about a month ago. It ended up not being true.
