Raid 5 Build

Thread Starter
This is for a friend for his work so things i need

Looking between i5/i7 and SB

so far SB mobo's dont look stable enough for me for the next to years to run any onboard raid until i do more research

1) Mobo

i'm not sure about onboard raid controllers but sometimes i dont trust it.

looking for a mobo that can support up to 1.5tb in raid 5. if a raid card controller is needed please post.

thats what i'm mostly concerned about the rest i can build up.

2) HDD's 1.5tb

i've been looking @ some and WD has caught my eye. probably the green's instead of the blacks. i know that 6.ogbps hdd's are cheap right now and very interested in that

going with the WD1502FAEX

thanks everyone for puts effort into helping me build this thread

Sounds like he wants a server. If so, you're looking at this wrong... (and probably should be moved to server forums).

With servers, you need to know usage and price first... hardware comes second.

How important is the data?
Is he aware redundency is not backup?
How many users will have access?
What kind of work is being done?
Once again...

To answer your question duckie

maybe that could be a good idea cause we could be looking @ it all wrong.

the data is important he just wants to raid 5 just in case one HDD goes bad.

explain redudency a little more. is it not like mirroring?

he will only have 1 user accessing it ( his secretary )

pretty much spreadsheets from the looks of it and mass PICS

I have 5 disks in RAID 5, The SB uses the same raid as the old X58 did, So you would be able to check up on your RAID using IRST while in windows. IRST will tell you if their are any issue and what port the bad HD is on, you can even swap them out without even exiting windows if your feeling up to it.

What don’t you trust? The new SB chipsets have the port failure issue fixed. If you want to go P55 than they also support the same kind of raid as far as i know.

If your that worried about the chipset than get a dedicated RAID card, It will take up a PCI-E slot but they don’t take up your system resources like built in RAID does and they tend to be more reliable.

The way RAID 5 works is basic. Lets say you have 4 disks in raid 5. Well 3 Of the disks will basically be running in RAID 0 with all data striped across them.
The Extra drive or 4th drive will have key pieces of data from all the drives that is required to rebuild the data if one HD dies.

The down side of RAID 5 is the initializing time when you first set up the array and the rebuild time when a failed drive is replaced. this can take a few hours and even days depending on the amount of data, Speed of the Drives, and the power of the RAID card.

That will work, Just be aware that the boot partation needs to be 2TB or less, Windows can not boot from anything over 2TBs, thats at least how it has been for awhile.

Unless he goes with a Gigabyte board with 3TB+ Unlock Utility.

The lack of TLER in WD's consumer drives tends to cause some severe degradation in overall performance in RAID levels higher than 0.

Also: 6Gbps isn't going to give you much gains outside of circumstances where you have mem cache misses but disk cache hits.
