3GB GTX 580 or 1.5GB sufficient on U3011 2560x1600 maxxing AA whenever possible? - Page 4

Good work on this thread OP, and everyone else thumb.gif

Yeah, bottom-line, 2 x 1.5GB is going to fine for every game with 0xAA at 30" monitor size. Heck, even with 2 x 1.3MB that'd be enough the vast majority of the time w/o AA.

MOST games you'll be able to crank up the AA, but SOME you'll have to dial back your ambitions a bit, due to vram limitation. 2 x 3GB you won't have to. I'd say it's that simple really.

One thing I've noticed about vram usage is that games that have really large open 'levels' and long draw distances tend to use the most vram. Games like Crysis, Gamebryo (Fallout, Oblivion) engine games, the Stalker games, and GTAIV ... all are vram hogs, and all have big, wide-open levels.

Metro is a bit of an exception to this general rule, as it's levels are typically pretty small ... not sure why it's such a vram hog offhand. Textures must be really high resolution or something (though by looking at most of the NPC's, you wouldn't guess it).

BTW, I don't think you actually tapped out your vram usage in Metro, it's just that adding 4xMSAA with everything else maxed at 1080p is too much for a single 570, processing-wise.

I'd also add that vram usage doesn't track proportionally with resolution in the sense that 4.1megapixels won't require double the vram of 2.1megpixels.

The frame buffer size of course has to double, but a lot of what uses the vram is the storage of textures, and these won't change their resolution (which determines their memory use) when switching between the two screen resolutions.

Hopefully someone can post some screens of their vram usage on their 30" monitor on some of the same games you tested above. My guess is that the vram usage goes up by about 20% when going from 1080p to 2560x1600 when all else is kept equal.

Well.. that sound about right...

since i have noticed that my VRAM usage didn't go up as much as i thought when i went for 3 screen...

i mean i can still run GTA4 Maxed... and thats a VRAM hog... (yes i know it doesn't use AA)

but at the higher res... AA does make a huge difference to the VRAM...

I can run some tests tonight when i get home... (if i can get afterburner working with the latest drivers)

Thanks Brett. After re-reading RagingCaine's post and comparing his with my screens, I believe that what you mentioned on the vram usage being majorly used for storage of textures has truth to it. When multiplying the resolution 3 times in comparing Metro on mine to RagingCaine with AA being set as 'AAA' and not '4xMSAA' - it would prove that 1080p takes up about 1.0-1.1GB vram with AAA. If you multiply the resolution by 3 times, (1080p x 3), the vram increases to ~1450MB from ~1150MB, which is about 300MB for the resolution jump.

On top of that, when I ran Metro at 1080o maxed with 4xMSAA, I hit 1200+ vram usage (nearly 100% of my 1280MB on my gtx570), and Raging shows his 4xMSAA 1080p screen using 1329MB of the VRAM, which means I probably maxed out. My still screen with the campfire animated provided a steady 30+fps, so I think it was in fact the vram sucked dry. Mind you, my GTX 570 is OCed to 850 core! smile.gif hehehe (wishful thinking i guess)

Point is, I need to see some 2560x1600 screens with Metro, GTA IV, Stalker, Crysis 2 please!, and other demanding games (not necessarily on the vram) before any conclusion can be made strictly on 2560x1600 resolution, which is my main concern and purpose for this thread. RagingCain, thanks for the screens, and although there is some guess work involved in trying to narrow down vram usage at 1600p, I'd still like to see some screens on that res to take out the guesswork we're doing here. smile.gif

I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. Mafia, since you're running a Dell 30", could you perhaps post up some screens if it's not too much trouble? smile.gif

I can tell you my experience so far.

I used to have a single GTX-580 SuperClocked (now it's for sale wink.gif) and powered two Dell U3011s with it.

When I was gaming, I would game on one monitor @ 2560x1600 and use the other one for monitoring everything (temps etc.). I was able to run EVERY game I played (BF: BC2, CoD: BO, Bulletstorm, L4D2, etc. etc.) on MAX settings, full AA (32xCSAA), 16xAF, HBAO = ON (BC2) and never had any issues whatsoever. The 580 was never OC'd and consistently gave me over 60fps in ALL the games.

Of course, I didn't and still don't play games like Metro 2033 or Crysis so I can't tell you about those games but for all the other modern games that I've played, one GTX-580 and it's 1.5GB of VRAM has more than sufficed at max settings and AA turned all the way up.

Now I have 2 EVGA GTX-590 in Quad-SLI and since I'm playing at ultra-high resolution (8100x1600), the VRAM issue is noticeable. I have to turn down my AA to 2xMSAA and turn HBAO=OFF (in BC2) and in games like Bulletstorm, I can't even use 2xAA.

Having said that, if you're going to use only one 30" monitor, the 1.5GB of VRAM is more than enough. Yet, if you haven't got one yet, I would still get the 3GB version to be future-proof in case you decide to go surround!

32xCSAA on 1600p, one stock sc gtx 580, 60+ FPS in bc2? Were you on Directx9 or something? No way you can get 60 FPS with one gtx 580 on those settings.

I'm pretty sure it was on DX11. Isn't BC2 a DX11 game?

When I checked the settings.ini file, the DX11 'version' was set to "Auto".

Also, Bulletstorm was also maxed out (settings) and I'm pretty damn sure that game is DX11.

Bulletstorm uses the Unreal 3.5 engine and is NOT DX11. It is DX9/10, per the engine.

I don't own Metro or GTA, but I can help with Crysis 2. In my quick play-through @1440p, I topped out right around 1GB on extreme, so you should be fine (most of the time the vram usage hovered in the low-mid 900s).

crysis22011042116534841.jpg

Granted it's not quite 1600p but your VRAM usage shouldn't be much heavier.

That said, I'd expect VRAM usage to increase once the DX11 patch is out. But, there's a lot of headroom atm.

I do own Metro 2033 and GTA IV, and all I can tell you is: get the 3GB version. You are already going to buy an excellent monitor, you wouldn't want to be left wanting on the GPU side after you find out the VRAM is not enough to max everything out.

In GTA IV I could max out the VRAM usage on my previous GTX460 1GB without even maxing out AF or view distances or vehicle density, or shadows, at... 1280x800!

Here, I don't know if you have already read this review. The card reviewed is clocked the same as a reference GTX580, yet it delivers higher framerates, even at 1980x1080.
