3GB GTX 580 or 1.5GB sufficient on U3011 2560x1600 maxxing AA whenever possible? - Page 8

i wish u could upgrade your VRAM like you used to be able to back in the old days

it was so handy...

then again it would also be nice if a graphics card was like a small motherboard...

where you could change the GPU and RAM if the onboard chipset supported it

You'll be fine. You may not be able to "max" every title on just one 580, but VRAM won't be the limiting factor.

6990+6970. 200W less, 500$ less, and beating 580 Tri-SLI. Impressive.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/...trifire_review

Conclusion:

''AMD Radeon Tri-Fire is giving you the same or better performance than GTX 580 3-Way SLI for $500 and 200 watts less. You get both a money savings and a power savings using Radeon 6990/6970 Tri-Fire instead of GeForce GTX 580 3-Way SLI.

It just makes no sense to build a GTX 580 3-Way SLI currently. AMD Radeon 6990/6970 Tri-Fire is better in terms of value, efficiency, and gaming performance than GTX 580 3-Way SLI. If you want to utilize that performance, the 2GB of RAM per GPU on the Radeon HD 6970 will allow you to do this and provide a noticeable gameplay experience and visual improvement over GTX 580 3-Way SLI. No other conclusion can be made at this point, AMD Radeon HD 6970 Tri-Fire is a tremendous value compared to GTX 580 3-Way SLI, and Tri-Fire is the better choice for multi-display gaming.

Given NVDIA's history of excellent SLI scaling, we expected to see the GeForce GTX 580 3-Way SLI dominating AMD Radeon Tri-Fire. Instead, this review has only further reinforced what an incredible value AMD's current generation video cards really are.''
Well... ouch.

Nice - I'm haven't found a need for the 32x MSAA or other crazy stuff (but maybe I will now that I have this sweet monitor )

I'll hopefully have it fired up after work tomorrow.

Hello,
for a U3011 what would be your choice between a single 580 with 1.5GB and a single 6970 with 2GB ?
(no room for CF or SLI)

EVGA just released the GTX 580

Sell my 570 and go with 2x 3GB or just get 2x 6950s 2GB reflashed with the Dell U3011 ?

It is all up to how much money you want to spend. Do you want the fastest for a premium price or do you want 80% of the performance for half the cost?

You already know what I think

You may want to wait though until you've seen a review specifically pitting the SLI 580 3GB vs Xfire 6950 or the 6990 (I'm guessing unlocked 2x6950's are extremely close to a 6990 in perf) at 2560x1600.

Just to point out: you could also just go w/6970's ... still quite a bit cheaper than 2x580 3GB.

Illogical.

On a single 2650X1600 monitor, with a 1000$ 6990+6970 set-up, he will be able to play every game at max settings max AA/AF, no problems. And 6990+6970 can go head-to-head with 580 Tri-SLI, so why pay 1000$ for an inferior 580 SLI set-up?

And why pay 500$ more for Tri-SLI if you can already play everything with max settings for 1000$ on that monitor at 2560X1600?

My housemate just picked up an XFX 6950. Gonna help him flash it to a 6970 - such a shame vram usage is not something that can be shown using MSI Afterburner's OSD - As I'd put Metro on his system and run it at 1080p maxed with 4xMSAA.

I think I'm going the same route, with 2x 6950s flashed to 6970s and then overclocked further to possible 950Mhz or so.
