Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS or SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI

Thread Starter
My Hitachi 2TB drive looks like it's going to fail soon. Luckily it's still in warranty, but I'm not going to trust Hitachi with my data anymore. I'm deciding to get either a Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS or SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI. I'm primarily using the drive for archive purposes and not for booting/gaming. I've read that Samsung has lower performance but has better power savings. Any thoughts?

The WD is the slower of the two and more expensive, yet it has great reliability, low noise level, consumption and temperature.

The Samsung is cheaper and just as reliable as the WD. I'm running 5 of them in my server. You can't go wrong with either choice. IMO go with the Samsung it cheaper and one of the best HDs out there.

hmm personally i would go with the f4 (got a few of them), its got lower power consumption and since its not for anything that really needs the performance (also its cheaper) it would prob fit your needs better.

I have a WD10EARS, the 1TB version, and it works fine. I do find the power management settings a little annoying though. It takes a couple seconds to wake up when you first try to access media on it. Once it is woken up it works fine though.

I have also noticed that it defragments VERY slowly. It goes fast for the first minute or two and then slows way down and literally takes 24 hours to defragment a few GB of highly fragmented data. I use the 3rd party "ultimate defrag" program from disktrix.

Nice drive, just not the fastest thing in the world. But perfectly fine for a storage drive that I do not even access on a daily basis.

I have used both, one that I had from a friend (the WD20EARS) and I purchased a Samsung F4. Both were used in my linux file server, and I had no problems with either. During performance testing the Samsung performs better than the WD. I was getting ~90MB/s with file transfers over my network with the WD, and ~115MB/s with the Samsung.

Between the two I would go with the f4, but both are good. As for reliability I have not had a problem, but have not used either for a very long time.

The F3/F4 Samsung series is a top notch release in both reliability and speed, at least according to newegg (highest rated drive) and my own personal experience with 2x F3s.
