Thinkpad battery defective?

I have a fairly new Lenovo ThinkPad and I think it has a defective battery.

It will charge to about 50% and display what the screenshot below shows. If I let it charge for a few more hours it will get up to %100 like normal.

When its fully charged the battery lasts about an hour and a half. Around %40 battery power the laptop will shut off and beep. If I plug it in and turn it back on it will show the battery at 3 or 4% life and charging.

Any ideas?

One advantage of the Thinkpad is the ThinkVantage utilities in which you can prevent your battery from charging at a certain point. To avoid overcharging your battery, I'd recommend setting that to 95% and don't let it start charging until the battery is almost drained. I have my threshold set to charge at 7% and stop at 95%, it will make the battery last a lot longer.

As to why yours died so quickly is beyond me, so it probably is a defective battery. I've never had to use Lenovo's support service because my Thinkpad has served me well for almost four years now, but I'd definitely recommend taking advantage of ThinkVantage whenever you do get that replaced.

By the way, what model Thinkpad are you using? I'm using a T61 14"

EDIT: It just occured to me that your software is showing the battery as being in good health, it has been my experience that that software does a pretty decent job of determining such details. Try updating ThinkVantage or uninstalling/re-installing it see what happens.

Its actually a used T61 I just picked up for $200 on craigslist. I did a clean install of 7 on it so it has the latest drivers and software. No idea how the battery has been treated. I will definitely be setting the think vantage battery stuff up. The laptop is for my grandfather who plans to use it mostly unplugged on wireless when hes in his recliner

You could try downloading hardware monitor. On my laptop it shows the wear level (not sure how accurate it is) for the battery.
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

my wear level is 70%. Unfortunately, due to the battery life I am getting I believe that is pretty accurate.

Thinkvantage was discontinued a few years ago IIRC

Thinkpads have had garbage batteries for a while now. T60s and T61s along with the T410s are lucky to get even a year before the battery fails.

As far as I know, ThinkVantage was not discontinued as I occasionally get updates from the software manager, but either way, it still works wonderfully. In any case, if the batteries tend to only last a year, then I have been incredibly lucky that mine has lasted four.

In any case, the T61 doesn't have the greatest battery life anyway, but then again it has great battery life for when it was made. I get 3 to 3:30 hours (with the brightness turned all the way down) on a 95% charge depending on usage.
