Portal 2 a console port? - Page 11

Valve doesn't make games for consoles first...... they know they are more popular on the PC platform than the consoles. All console gamers care about is treyarch or infinity ward.

It annoys me when people make claims without backing of any kind (because the saving thing has obviously been busted).
No I am saying Valve knows how to make a game work as well on the computer as they do the console. The fact that the PC has a warning about NOT TURNING OFF THE CONSOLE that was patched out shows that it was developed for the console then ported to the PC... and they missed that one line of code that shows it is a console port... even if it is a VERY WELL DONE port that is optimized for the PC.

If the game wasn't ported from the console to the PC the PC would have never seen that error message. And there is no way around it, no matter what Valve says. If you want to believe their lie because its Valve... go for it... if you want to hate a game because its a console port... go for it... if you want to love the game because you think its a good game... then awesome! haha

I've never once bashed Valve for this. I am just saying they are getting a free pass because people think Valve is like the second coming. I never once said the game was bad. I am enjoying it.
I am, however, severely disappointed that the game is only 8 hours long give or take... 17 with a partner.

The PC screenshot is evidence of a console port. Do you have any evidence besides Valve's word that it is not?

Don't take this personally. It is what it is.

I think that it may be benificial to take a look at the process of creating a game for multiple platforms to shed some light on this situation. (I only know this after having worked at a game development studio for a few years.)

When developing a game, an engine is created completely on computers. If the engine is designed to be a computer game, they begin exporting isos of the game to run on computers for testers and the game then begins its polishing process. If the game is multi platform, they then have to make changes to the pc code and asset library so that it works with the given console's hardware, controls, etc. These different versions of the game now exist separately in different databases for updating purposes.

When this change is made, assets are changed to reflect the changes, such as showing which controls do what. However, large development companies usually use programs like Perforce (what we use at my company) to sync any changes that the art department or developers make to the core database. Some changes are supposed to be made across all of the platforms, such as a texture change or an audio change, but other changes are port specific. Sometimes an error can happen when a change is made across multiple databases that was intended for a single port.

Since Valve made it clear that this was the case, I'm actually led to believe that them changing it to say "Please don't shut off your console" was the last change made, and because of some database management error, it overrode every single asset on every single port for that purpose. And since it was the last change they made, it's most likely that the console version had its assets adjusted after having finished the PC version.

So, from what I can see, the console version was made at the same time as the PC version, and the console assets were changed last.

Circular arguments are fun!

The PC screenshot is evidence that it looks like someone decided to check in a bugfix to multiple configuration management repositories simultaneously without actually double checking every line of code.

Do you have any evidence besides your word that it's not?

why would a PC coded game have a line for a console in it if it wasn't designed for console and brought over to PC? Thanks though

the problem is, we really do not know.

But... since the game went gold months ago... no one played it again since? No testing? They waited til the community found it to change it? mistakes happen, but that is a pretty easy to spot mistake if someone in their testing department tested it one last time on the computer since sending out the final code.

As far as I know Valve has more PC games than console games and I don't see one reason why would they make a console game and port it over to PC.

Portal 2 is using The Source Engine

The Source Engine was developed and again as far as I know still developed for PC's only.

I've got nothing against consoles, but I extremely disagree with the statement that Portal 2 is a console port which is based on one screenshot which shows (most likely) a mistake.

On a fun side:

The PC screenshot being a -1 and Valve's word being a +1.

If we add up those two numbers we get a 0
