Portal 2 a console port? - Page 16

It IS an outdated engine though...

Doesn't necessarily mean it's ****, but it definitely is outdated.

The thing that (for me) makes it acceptable to still be using it is the detail that Valve has put into the graphics and environments, and the textures also (variety and detail, resolution for textures is still a bit low).

Very few other games can compete on these qualities, and that's what makes it very visually impressive for me still.

I also like that I can max out the resolution and AA and it runs perfectly with V-Sync.

However, it clearly is now getting to the point where they can't put more polish on a very old engine, and I think (personally) for their next game it needs a major update, not just enhancements.

In my opinion (and it's an opinion), I think a game has to meet one of a few qualifications to be considered a console port:
  • The game engine would have to be designed and tweaked in such a way that it is optimized for a performance threshold which falls in line with the performance capabilities of the next gen consoles. Meaning, the game engine will not run as efficiently when higher settings are used, even on high end PCs. (An example of this is GTA IV on the PC. There are countless complaints of people who have extremely high end systems who, when using max settings, get between 30 and 40 FPS.)
  • The game engine has few graphics options. This is usually due to the fact that the game, being developed for the predefined hardware found in consoles, was not directly designed to be scalable across an entire range of PCs. (An example of this could be Crysis 2. The game engine, being developed using DX9 and optimized for consoles, uses a simplified graphics control that restricts the user to a few predefined quality levels, so as to make sure that accessibility is maximized and that the game itself functions correctly and efficiently.)
  • The game controls feel clumsy and awkward on the PC, yet natural and comfortable on consoles. This is usually due to an extensive amount of testing on consoles and a lack of testing on PCs.
  • The game assets, such as textures and models, look best using television resolutions, but begin showing flaws at resolutions higher than those.

Now, these are really things that make me think a game is a console port. If someone feels any of those things about Portal 2, then they're probably right in saying that, to them, it feels like a console port. However, I wouldn't consider an art asset like the menu warning a valid point that the game is a console port. I think that the actual game, visual or gameplay wise, has to show signs like those listed previously for me to consider it a console port. (That's just my opinion of course, which is worth roughly 2 cents.)
I've seen complaints in this thread alone about some poor texture mods. but no screen shots. I didn't go looking for issues to start taking screen shots because... like i said before... i don't care. I am enjoying a really good name!

Example, in areas on the sealing you can find what looks like stepped shadows.. that is something I see often on CONSOLE games.. I think they made it for Console and then ported / polished it a bit for the PC version, they most likely did that to make it rather close no matter what platform you play it on. (because the consoles are limited hardware wise) but they also went for balance so you can run it on older pc hardware just fine.

It is still a good game though.

I can tell you that with my sig rig, running only a 4870 512 - It runs on max everything with no lag at all.
Valve removed the Super high texture option in source ages ago... mat_picmip -10 which if you ever looked at the way TF2 was before this change.. it was amazing... Since it was applied to the Source engine... it applies to this game as well... it could look much better... but they stole our command for the sake of stability.

I agree. I think they've done a beautiful job of squeezing every last ounce out of the Source engine.

Its not that you are the bad guy. It's just that your logic or lack thereof makes you open to argument.

Valve has been creating PC games for over a decade. So what makes more sense to you:

A. They have been designing PC games for over 10 years, and will save time and money and come out with a better product by creating it on PC's then porting to consoles.

or.

B. Design it on a system using an engine that is designed to run on PC. Knowing it will cost more money and will require much more work. (they have stated in the past is extremely hard to code for the ps3, so much so that they said they would never make another PS3 game again, but money and the allowance of steam on PS3 changed that) then backport that product to their native system.

It like walking barefoot over linoleum or over glass. The path is obvious.

It just makes you sound foolish. That being said everyone shut the #^$7 up and play.

But is it hard to program for the 360? They didn't even need Steam for that.
My arguments are as valid as any. They had a strict PC game... then ported it to the console... BUT STILL managed to have a console warning screen pop up.

I'm not sure why you can just shrug that off, when if it was designed on the computer then ported to consoles that the computer version would still have code from a console on it...

unless it is not as hard to program for the consoles if they can program for all three at once.

which another poster has stated.

It could be as easy as over worked coders doing menus or certain parts of the game and during brain fart manage to put in the wrong thing. Mistakes happen, If it plays like a pc game, looks like a pc game, then it is a port..<== that is what im getting from you.

Edit: anyways done trollin' for today, off to 2 hr traffic so I can play portal for 3 hrs..maybe.

And all I'm getting from you is NO ITS VALVE IT CAN'T BE A CONSOLE PORT.
I still stand by the fact if we were talking about an EA Title, there would be less people defending them on this forum
