i7 870 OC

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I just recently upgraded and im currently running the following

i7 870
8gb RIPJAW 1333
p55 usb3 rev 2.0
6950(flashed to 6970)

I'm interested in water cooling as I seem to run fairly low on the FPS spectrum on games like cod blops 55-80 fps with everything maxxed 1680..

Anyways I was looking at the H70, im aiming for 4.2ghz from my 870, from everything I've read this should be capable of this but I would like input specific to my situation, what do you guys think?

My 870 hit 4.2 with no issues. I had it under a custom loop, but you should be able to get there. Not 100% sure if that cooler will do the trick for that OC (depends on the vcore needed to get there), but it is worth a shot.

Yea I agree, possible, but probably not that easy, I'm under a custom loop as well and the H70 isn't the strongest cooler, think of it about in line with top air coolers.

You could disable HT for the temps, that might help you achieve higher clocks, but that would only really be useful for gaming.

Well I know that my case is already pre drilled for water cooling, and I've got more than enough room, do you guys have a reccomendation perhaps any water cooling system around 100-150USD?

Also, the system is used only for gaming, i wasnt aware that DISABLING HT would be beneficial, i heard it was only detrimental

Yea, for the same OC; 4.2GHz, my i7 (though a different socket) gets about 63 GFlops with HT off and 54 with HT on and it reduces your heat generation by quite a lot.

For cooling kits, the XSPC rasa 750 kits are very good. I don't know what their exact cost in USD is, but they range from about £120 upwards to over £200.

The parts they ship with are all solid mid level water cooling parts and the water block is arguably one of the best on the market today, which means they can cool to within 5-10oC of loops made from the "best" components.

The kit I would recommend is the Rasa 750 RX 240, that will easily allow you to add a graphics cooling block in at a later date if you'd like.

If you're trying to save cash though, an RX 120 kit will do fine for your CPU too (note that it's not the RS unless you need to, RS Rasa kits ship with a slimline rad which is less efficient)

The 240 is 129.99USD from FrozenPC, looks like exactly what I was looking for.

I know I can probably find this in another thread, but im in class right now so I shouldnt be browsing even this much tongue.gif, does anyone know offhand what the best cooling liquid is to use? I know I can use distilled water as a bare minimum

An i7 870 underwater would do fine. I run mine 24/7 at 4.1GHz, 1.27v on air. Never gets past 74°C, you should be epic underwater. Shoot for 4.5 if voltages allow.

Distilled water is the best, water has some of the best thermal transfer properties going so adding stuff tends to only detract from that.

You will want a killcoil to stop any microbes building up however, you could use something like PT-nuke, but I have had bad experiences with just using that personally.
