Hyperthreading - Lower FPS and stuttering on i3 530 in Heaven

I finally ran Heaven 2.1 benchmark with hyperthreading off on my i3 530.

3 loops with HT on. Next, restart computer with HT off, and run 3 more loops. Only keep the best score. All settings as seen in my signature. 3D vision disabled in the nvidia control panel. Nvidia 266.58 drivers. GTX 580 overclocked to 890MHZ in both tests.

Wow! I almost can't believe how much performance improved without hyperthreading. Even my worst Heaven score with HT off was better than my best score with HT on.

With Hyperthreading:
Mild stuttering (not severe, only brief and mild)

Lower Average FPS (125.3 FPS)
Lower Minimum FPS (51.3 FPS)
Higher Maximum FPS (288.2 FPS)

Without Hyperthreading:
Stuttering is reduced to unperceiveable levels. I think maybe it's still there, but it's so small that I am not sure if I actually see it. For practical purposes, it no longer exists.

Higher Average FPS (137.0 FPS)
Higher Minimum FPS (81.4 FPS)
Lower Maximum FPS (273.6 FPS)

Monitor is 120Hz. Stuttering may be less visible on 60Hz monitors.

My question is ... for playing games, is there any reason to turn hyperthreading on?

By the way, I did a third test which was .... start with HT on and change affinity to only run Heaven on 2 cores. I expected this would produce the highest FPS. 2 real cores for Heaven and 2 hyperthreaded "cores" for everything else. Unfortunately, this resulted in terribly low FPS and terrible stuttering. Only 10 FPS. Affinity set to 1 or 2 or 3 cores did this. I have no clue why.

Only reason you're seeing that kind of difference is because of that low resolution.

Me and donrapello compared my Q9650@4.05GHz VS his E8500@4.05GHz in several benchmarks and games. Using GTX 570 and 1920x1200. And in Heaven benchmark there was very small differences

Here's an update.

I just tested frame rates in Assassin's Creed with and without hyperthreading.

In one area, I see ~55fps without hyperthreading. 100% cpu usage
In the same area, with hyperthreading, I see ~85fps. 50-55% cpu usage (as shown in windows task manager).

I tested another trick. Hyperthreading on and set affinity to run Assassin's Creed only on 2 cores. The result is approximately 75fps.

Conclusion: 30 fps increase with hyperthreading on versus hyperthreading off.

I will leave hyperthreading on. It can help tremendously.

If you play games that use more then 2 threads, then HT on would help. If all you play is Starcraft 2 and older games that do not use more then 2 like quite a few console ports, then HT could be turned off.

Try different Drivers. There are hundreds, if not thousands of threads about Fermi stuttering around the web, other then GPU usage it's the second largest complaint.. If you have another GPU(lower end) try that and see if you get the same thing. I do not see any stuttering as a result of HT being on, and I haven't really seen anyone else complain about it either.

I am sure the stuttering is not caused by Nvidia drivers or Fermi architecture. If the video card caused stuttering, then it should stutter with and without hyperthreading. The cpu and motherboard must "feed" data to the gpu. The GPU is not expected to have special compatibilty with hyperthreading, as far as I know. I dont see justification to blame Nvidia.

If you want to see if hyperthreading causes stuttering, then run Heaven benchmark at very low resolution on your i3 with GTX460.
