Best performing CPU and Motherboard for around $400?

I'll be doing a new build and need the parts on Saturday. That means I will be ordering tonight!

I've had my mind stuck on getting an i5 2500k and a B3 SLI board but after looking at benchmarks I'm not so sure what to get.
The 1090t and the i7 920 perform very close the the 2500k. I like AM3 and X58 boards better than the B3 boards since there are more lanes. (I will be doing SLI GTX 470's and most likely a GT 240 for additional folding)

What would be the best purchase for the money? If I buy SB I refuse to put more than 1.38v into it so my overclocking will be cut down.

Any suggestions? I'm starting to switch my mind over to an i7 920 at the moment!

Realistically, AM3 is out of the question as very few boards officially support SLI. The ones that support Xfire can be hacked to support SLI though.

IMO go with 2500K, but if you really want full bandwidth then go with an i7-9xx and a good X58 board.

Any reason you won't go over 1.38v with SB?

I don't want to destroy the CPU with an insane amount of voltage.
Intel's claim of 1.58v being the max will damage the chip without question. (unless temps are sub-zero ofc)

While going through benchmarks the i7 1156 & 1366 are very similar to the 1155's. I'm not really sure which to pick.

try the Gigabyte UD3. There are reported problems with running some brands of SSD in RAID though, but IDE and AHCI seem to have no problems. I don't know if the $209 price tag is within your budget, considering the price of an i7 920.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Motherboards+-+Intel-_-GIGABYTE-_-13128423

EDIT: Are you saying that your mobo budget is around $100? Cuz the only 920's I have found approach $300

If going X58,

P6T + i7 950.
Triple SLi, 7.1HD Audio, Asus quality, great overclocker.

Something along those lines.
Edit, well if it were me anyways smile.gif
