Now this isn't right...

post #1 of 29

My build is listed below. It's newly created, say less than 1.5 weeks old. My issue is kind of a strange one, and I'm willing to chalk it up to burn in if need be.

Basically, programs are opening ridiculously slow. jGrasp, a lightweight java compiler (the 64-bit version) takes about a minute and a half to open. On my intel atom netbook? 5 seconds max. Chrome opens pretty quickly, but I have yet to find a system that it doesn't open almost instantaneously in. I also us the full CS5 suite (64 bit), and while it runs pretty quickly, it takes a tremendous amount of time to open.

The odd thing is, my RAM has typically only 2 GB's being used, and my cores all are running at less than 20%. Temperatures are cool (30 degrees is about the median temp) and nothing s OC'd (yet).

The process pops up almost immediately in the task manager, but thats the last I see of it for a few minutes. It's sad to see my old Pentium D or my Intel Atom (both with 2 gigs of memory) outrun this monster. Anyone have any ideas?

Yessir, brand new everything. Even the OS was the System Builder's 64 bit from newegg. The oddest thing is that the programs function really well, it's just the opening time that sucks. I was thinking my page file, but I have two gigs of RAM not being utilized, so that's probably not the problem.

It's most likely related to hard drive if programs are opening incredibly slow.

Definitely strange... that benchmark looks fine. You should run Partition Wizard (or something similar) and have it check the file system. It similar to the regualr chkdsk but I think it works better. Its possible you have a faulty hard drive that is experiencing read/write errors slowing everything down. This would make sense trying to load a program because it has to search around for all the necessary files. One thing I've noticed with my past bad hard drives is that they almost always run really hot compared to properly functioning drives. (Not at all definitive though)

Something else could be that windows itself experienced an error when installing, kinda unlikely but anything is possible when microsoft is involved. You could be in need of a bios flash as well.

No errors as far a I can tell during install. As far as I can tell, my HDD according to SpeedFan's SMART status, HDTunePro, and my mobo's builtin check, the HDD is fine.

Temp wise it's around 34-38 C, and the system is completely stock i.e no OC'ing at all. I knew I should have bought an SSD...

No. That benchmark does not look fine.

@OP

That bench puts your min rate down to 4MB/sec which isn't supposed to be happening at all. You should maybe, worst case scenario with a WD Blue see a lowest min rate of 25~ MB/sec.

Something is amiss with that HD. Your Access time is also about double what it should be.

Replace it now.
