5870 for my first gaming computer

Hey guys

I'm building my first gaming computer and I ned some help. Someone is going to sell me a Sapphire Vapor 5870 for $200. If I upgrade to dual SLI later, will I have to buy another VAPOR card or will any 5870 work?

I have friends who can sell me some parts and some I will buy from ebay. This is my planned build:

Intel Core i5 760 $180
EVGA P55 FTW $80
6GB Adata 2000mhz RAM $50
Sapphire Vapor 5870 $200
OCZ 60GB SSD $100
2TB HDD $70
NZXT Full Tower Zero 2 Case $90
PSU Corsair TX750w $100
ASUS 22x DVD Drive $35
Creative Labs Titanium Fatal1ty Sound Card $80

Any suggestions or changes? It has to come in under my $1000 limit. Thanks in advance guys!

It could be any 5870, manufacturer does not matter.

You're buying tripple channel memory for a dual channel motherboard. You want either 4GB or 8GB, 2 or 4 sticks. Honestly 4 is enough for gaming, but if you're feeling froggy you can jump to the 8GB.

What brand HDD? I prefer Samsung spinpoints, especially since they might get hard to get your hands on here soon.

Good choice on MB, I almost bought one myself. It's an i5, not an i7 though I believe.

It's not the brand I'm worried about. The Vapor is factory overclocked. Will it work with a non-oc card?

I thought dual channel RAM was recommended, not required?

I was just gonna go with the cheapest HD I could find. Can you tell any brands to avoid?

Yeah I got the P55 FTW because the price was really good.

It will work, but both cards will run at the slower speed.

...and on the AMD side its called Crossfire not SLI.

Any 5870 will crossfire with another 5870. There are better PSUs than the TX-750.

These are better alternatives: Corsair TX-750 V2. Antec HCG-750W. Antec True Power New 750W.

The 5870 is a stellar card. It will fit perfectly with your proposed build. I bought the 5870 when it was first released and actually ended up buying another from another member on here this past Christmas. Reason why I sold both of my 5870's and upgraded to a GTX580 was because Crossfire was not the thing for me and I wanted to try something new.

Edit: Just for clarification, the P55 platform (i5 760, i7 860, i7 875k, etc.,) only supports dual channel memory so you will have to buy ram in sets of 2X2GB, 2x4GB, etc., Triple channel memory (3x2GB, 3x1GB, etc.,) is only supported under the X58 platform (i7 920, 930, 980x, etc.,).

May I ask what you didn't like about crossfire? And would 2x5870 be better than a 580?

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Overall Yes, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/300?vs=305

http://www.overclock.net/graphics-ca...hd-5870-a.html <- On of our own found them to be about equal.

Crossfire'd 5870's is marginally faster than a single GTX580. Like I mentioned above, I upgraded to a GTX580 because I wanted to try something new.
