[TH] Samsung Challenges Intel For Chip Leadership

“The rise of Samsung is one of the biggest stories of the last decade in the worldwide semiconductor market,†said iHS iSuppli analyst Dale Ford. “When experts discuss competition for Intel, they almost always focus on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). While it is true that AMD is Intel’s major competitor in the microprocessing unit (MPU) market, Samsung is the primary rival of Intel for overall semiconductor market share. And although they are mainly indirect competitors in the marketplace, Intel and Samsung have been ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, for a number of years.â€

Samsung is making news recently.

I don't mind at all; win win for the consumer, and they are a great company in my opinion.

Except for the spinpoints :'(

Samsung really isn't a competitor to Intel except in the SSD market. Samsung could easily buy up AMD. If they did it could give AMD much needed cash for R&D but why would they. It wouldn't make them any money and Intel already has too large of a share of the market.

Samsung makes mobile CPU's and many other parts that don't have to do with desktop CPU's. Don't forget about all the other mobile products they make.

Personally I think it would be sick to have another competitor enter the CPU market. I already Just looking around my room I have three Samsung monitors.

They can't make one if Intel won't license it to them.

In other words, AMD marketshare can go up 5% for a couple months until Intel reacts by locking all the major OEMs into only using Intel chips, thus causing AMD's market share to go down, in a big way, giving Intel time to pull ahead with a new architecture.

Sounds like a plan.

Har har har
I know. Also, AMD's license wouldn't transfer either due to patent protection and the legal mumbo jumbo around x64
