Ordered new M11x R3 this morning!!!

Thread Starter
Okay so I just ordered my first alienware, the M11X R3...

Comes with:

-- Intel® Core™ i7 2617M ULV 1.5GHz(2.6GHz w/Turbo Boost, 4MB Cache)
-- 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M
-- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz
-- 11.6" High Def (720p/1366x768) with WLED backlight
-- Soundblaster® X-Fi™ Hi Def Audio - Software Enabled
-- Internal Bluetooth 3.0

So I was going to round this setup with a Patriot Inferno 120GB SATA 2. Now will I be able to keep the stock 500GB HDD in there and the SSD, or will I have to swap one for the other? If so I will just order an external 2.5" HDD enclosure.

Do many find that SSD substantially increase battery life since your dropping 5-10W when your not using a HDD at full spin? Will that SSD fit I heard of people purchasing SSDs for the R1 and the R2 and they don't fit or are a ***** to get installed.

Also, did anybody purchase a anti-glare screen cover? If so any recommendations?

I don't think that you can have both the SSD and the HDD installed at the same time with the M11x (for not only size restrictions, but port restrictions as well, as I doubt that the laptop has an additional SATA port installed for another HDD/SSD to be installed). So I would have to suggest that you do pick up an external enclosure for the HDD which you are going to take out of the laptop. Good idea on the SSD BTW.

For battery life, you aren't going to experience a massive gain in battery life, only a couple of minutes on the short end, up to like ~20-30 minutes on the high end (but this is quite rare). You are mainly installing the SSD for stability, and most of all, speed. j

The SSD should fit fine, you should be able to simply just remove the old HDD, and insert the new SSD. Then when you boot up the laptop, you will have to reinstall the OS (using either a USB install or USB optical drive).

Thanks for the reply +rep. I am most likely going to backup any useful stuff like preinstalled games etc. and then reinstall the win 7 back onto the SSD without any bloatware. Then I am going to just partition enough for me to dual boot Linux and windows 7. It will be I think hair pulling to figure out how to get the aligning of the SSD setup for Gentoo Linux to not kill my SSD.

I am just going to get the Inferno drive through newegg with a USB 3.0 2.5" enclosure to insure top notch speeds.

When you get the laptop, before you put in the new hard drive, boot it up and see if there is an option to create restore disks that will restore to a new hard drive if the drive fails. Create the disks so all you have to do it install the new hard drive, boot up the system with the disks, and easily install the OS on the new drive. Dell doesn't put much bloatware on it because it's an Alienware

You can only have 1 2.5 in. device in the m11x, you wasted your money on a dual core i7, could've gotten the i5, no difference what so ever. 8GB of ram in a 11 inch laptop?

really?

M11x R1 came with an OS disc, so I assume the same for the R3.

Merely an assumption though

An 11inch laptop that outspecs most 15 inch laptops and 17 inch laptops, nice!

uhm... it only has the i7 option.. if you look at their site..

Anyways back to the OP: In other laptops from what i read SSD's only add maybe 5-10 min tops to the Laptop life

Also heres a quote about an m11x antiglare im guessing for last gen tho since it was in 2010:
Quote:
I bought one of these and it arrived today. Putting it on was pretty easy, but it took me a while to clean my screen and to make sure everything was dust free. So Yeah, I'm OCD like that.

So here's my take on it. It reduces the glare just slightly by diffusing the light at the cost of making it slightly grainy. Compared to my matte work laptop, this grain makes the screen look a bit fuzzy. And its also still a lot more reflective than my matte laptop.

Overall, i'm a bit disappointed with it considering that its about 30 bucks shipped. I think for the money, i would expecting better performance.

The only plus side is that it fits the bezel really well and I have some peace of mind that my screen is protected (at least until I find a better replacement)
