This is most likely a stupid question so please pardon my lack of knowledge, but what would you guys choose?

I'm planning on buying one card now and one in the future when I have a MOBO that supports SLI.

Palit GTX 580 3GB SLI
$1080 AUD

Palit GTX 590 3GB SLI

$1520AUD

Which combo will have greater performance? Are there any comparisons etc?

Depends on the resolution that you're going to be running at - if its on surround vision the 580 3GB SLI will do better because it won't run out of vram at high resolutions (surround on 30" monitors with plenty of AA). Please realize that the 590 "3GB" is really two 580 1.5GB chips - raw power wise, the SLI 590's are a crusher

If you can do it, go for the 590's

Yes but they aren't as fast as 580's are they.

For now im just looking for maximum FPS in any game with a single monitor at 1920x1080, with the possibility of switching to 3 monitors in the future.

SLI GTX 590s = downclocked quad-sli 580
SLI GTX 580s = Two stock-clock GTX 580s

The SLI GTX 590s will kick ass.

So you reckon they will give the best FPS with a single monitor at 1080p?

Ahh not right now, not with my current MOBO , but I guess it is a possibility in the future.

TRI SLI 580"s would cost me $1620 AUD
honestly I would go with two 3GB 580s.....huge buffer for those killer 3 monitor setups.....and if money is not an issue, why not add another $100 and get another 3GB 580?

edit......wait what? are seriously considering running QUAD SLI 580s with a Q9650?

1080p? Single monitor?

Unless you're planning on getting multiple monitors, or a 30" monitor, in the near future, even a single GTX 580 will be more than enough.

Also that CPU will bottleneck hard...

You think a single 580 will max the original Crysis with mods and Metro 2033?
