[Canucks] Valve Portal 2 Game Review - Page 5

I do not like the micro-transaction direction Valve is doing with Portal 2. This reeks of TF2 hats garbage.

There are a lot of people who are fans of Valve. However, if companies like Activision did what Valve did with Portal 2, people would be up in arms.

Maybe I will give Valve a pass this time, but I will be keeping a careful eye on them.

Hits the nail on the head there, because its Valve a lot of people turn a blind eye.

Theres a screenie on a thread somewhere (real or not I'm not sure) that mentions 'Please do not turn off your console' in Portal 2. Someone says console port and are instantly smacked down as if its blasphemy to utter 'console port' and 'Valve' in the same sentence.

They also said Valve must have put it in as a joke. Whether it is or not, I dont know, nor do I care.

Now I'm a Valve fan but they are not immune from criticism where criticism is due. My brother read a few reviews and mentioned Portal 2 is circa 4-5 hours long single player. Now if thats the case then that is simply not good enough

Coop almost doubles that. Most will also be replaying it at least once, as the game is just that good. There will also be missed achievements to get.

Co-op to me is multiplayer, my point was solely single player.

Missed achievements or not, its still a 4-5 hour run through.

A few weeks back there was uproar over a game (cant think what it was off the top of my head) that was of a similar length

I honestly feel sorry for valve. They've made genius look easy with so many games. One day they're going to just say "ok, let's make a slightly above average game" and the knives will come out.

Fortunately portal 2 wasn't that game.

I feel the same way. And if there are people stupid enough to spend money on TF2 hats i say let them. So long as it's not essential for the game i've got no problem with them charging, as i won't be paying them anything.

With regards to EP3, I would rather they took time on it as it is the last episode in the series, so they are going to want to get it right. I cant blame them for that. Sure would be nice if it was out sooner. It is nothing to argue about though guys lol. Go outside and get some sunshine

I'd give it a 10/10... this is the best game I've played since COD4 which also got a 10, and GTA:SA before that. Those are the only 'perfect' games I've played.

I have seen nothing to suggest it is anything like a console port... in fact I'd go as far to say it is one of the few AAA games that isn't. There are no bugs I've encountered, it runs incredibly fast, the textures are amazing (there is no way a console could run these), it looks brilliant and the keyboard and mouse work flawlessly. If this is a console port, what isn't, a PC only game? If I remember correctly a console port is one that removes features from the PC version to cater for the console crowd, and as far as I can tell this one definitely doesn't.

That is true, let them take their time

I love the Source engine; it's very smooth, scales very well, and is not very demanding on hardware.

The lighting Valve has achieved with Portal 2 is superb and adds to the magnificent atmosphere. However, to be honest, some textures could be better. From a distance most of the game looks superb, but when you get closer to some objects the lack of detail shows - sometimes it's not even admissible. That is only explainable as those particular textures are probably the same on the consoles (not saying the rest is though).

I'll post some screenshots I took of the SP - 1.130 screenshots to be precise. If you guys want me to post (under a spoiler alert, of course) some of the most beautiful sceneries and - to contrast, the not so good aspects, I will (probably make a thread for that).

As to the bugs, I haven't found any either. I left the game running the whole day yesterday, and I alt-tabbed out of it numerous times without a single problem.

The "Don't turn off you console" never showed up. I saved either by pressing F6 or going to the menu. I think there is a screen that might show that when you save through the menu, but it is so fast (less than a second), that most people with modern systems won't even be able to read it. That is probably why Valve missed that. I mean, I don't even know if I missed it, because I don't even know what's written in there LOL.

If I could summarize the game: it's a truly memorable experience.
