First Shot at KDE

Thread Starter
So, My first venture into the linux world was with Ubuntu. I read up on Latty's Linux challenge and decided to give it a go.

Ever since all I've ever used was GNOME as my GUI, but after hearing so many good things about KDE, I've decided to give it a shot.

It's been a while since I booted into Linux because my wife likes to play The Sims 3, and I've fallen into EVE really hard, and now I'm itching for an adventure into the world I know and love. So, I suppose this is a thread announcing my intent, and if you guys have any tips or suggestions to make, I'm all ears.

Run for the hills!

Just kidding. Having used KDE, albeit a while ago, I prefer GNOME. I should check 4.6 out and see what it has to offer, but I just felt like it was organized so oddly. Granted this was somewhere in the 3.0 release. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it since you were also a GNOME user.

I shall keep you posted for sure. Atleast you can install GUI's side by side.

So, after a massive system update, I'm DLing the KDE package in it's entirety. It'll take a while on my slow ass internet =[ (1.5Mbit DSL is all I can get in my area)

at first, you will think "OMG they've copied windows 7 aero!"

then once you start looking around, and getting use to it you will be like "OMG, windows 7 aero is retarded in comparison!"

then after a bit (a week or two) go back into gnome and you you will be like "w t f! why is gnome so ugly? why can't it do this or that! whose idea was it to make gnome the default of 90% of all distro's out there?!"

then you will go back into windows and sigh, cause you'll be missing all the greatness of kwin...

it should be a crime to replace kwin with compiz...compiz to me really is a replacement for metacity in gnome.

kwin does most of what compiz does, and then some features that are unique to it. i personally think it runs faster and smoother than compiz.

but go ahead if you want a gazillion useless features of compiz and miss out on some of the nicest features in kwin

Okay. I'll give it a shot if nothing else.

I'm not opposed to trying new things, I'm just used to gnome, and I find metacity to be garbage compared to Compiz.

Still waiting on this package to finish downloading..

just remember this, you know how some one has probably told you "linux is not windows" and remember that approach when you go to use KDE, "KDE is not GNOME"
