media pc sandy bridge vs thuban

I am trying to evaluate the choices.. for a friend.. media pc

Is a locked 2500 better than a thurban if you were using it as a media pc with onboard video to start.. upgrade later to a card..

Deciding between 6core and h67 as I don't think he is into overclocking...

Both processors are overkill for a media PC, by far. An Athlon II and a Core i3 2xxx could do this easily.

If he'd need that processing power then:
*IGPs are very similar, maybe with an edge to the AMD platform due to the far better drivers. When it would work the Intel IGP would be faster, but this wouldn't be often.
*the 2500 has two things for it: is very powerful in single threaded apps and consumes less; the Thuban has one thing for it (apart from the IGP) is it has great multi-threading speed.

My take is that is this speed isn't needed for a HTPC and they both consume too much for a small media box, but if you need one of these two CPUs you should choose based on what you think he'll use and if power consumption or the IGP are more important.

i3 is fine.

I have one in my htpc,(i3 550) oc'd it to 4gz on the stock cooler. Threw in a gtx 560 and it plays all my games maxed out at 1080p.

But the onboard gpu will do 1080p media just fine.

Yes... thanks... first
Has the h67 fixed the early sandy bridge sata II issues?
I Am mainly stressing the difference between the raw speed of 6 cores and the sophistication of sandy bridge being they resemble similar price points..
But you are right..like the first post ...perhaps even smaller would.be more then enough...I

I will do more research on what I can add if I go smaller on cpu/mobo..
I am in the 600 range... no os..

True... but what about our shrinking appendages? Should I have stated that in the beginning too? Have to have some ego boosting.... Haha!!

Looks like I will probably go without 6.. that's more for someone who really wants to use it for something...plus more power usage ....the 95w should b a nice setup... but I am definaly still interested in 1156 or some of those great and regors at under 100... some nice triple core too would easily handle media pc... but I wanna give him something to feel special about and have some room to grow...if he wants to use more... mainly music and tv / blu ray..web browsing.. but he also might start trying to take video from his gopro and put it on youtube... I wanna give him the power to also have a full fleadged pc and not just a media pc...though an i3 is still enough as is the first post was under the same guise too

All SATA III issues have been resolved.

Cool... that's my only quip with them...

I wanna give him something that next year and after he can still say its holding its newness technology wise... he wont need pci 3.0 or
New ram.. just some newer tech.. that keeps him a little ahead with investment...

I think for 100-200 premium if that In some apples to oranges comparison I think its worth the jump from 1156 or am3 for his particular needs...

I think 32nm is the way to go..1155 or 1156 ...I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some snazzyness of the thurban 6 core

So it will be 1155 or 1156 or some inexpensive AMD as the thurban is a bus for people who wanna move stuff
not just nip about to the store and home and the kids...I knew that already but was just looking for thoughts
