Is anyone here 'paid to play?'

Has anyone here ever made money or had some kind of income from playing pc games professionally? As far as i know the best way to do it is to be with a team of people playing a game that is hosted by a certain league and then you at some point get sponsorship money from someone who happens to think you are pretty good? Then it is a hard knock life where if you dont perform they kick you right out of there? Has anyone been in this grind playing 8 hours a day and getting 30 G's a year?

I have this one dude on my friends list that i played with/against a bunch of times in CodBlops that uesd to be on a team sponsored by Intel and Invidea playing Cod2 making 50 G's a year.

That just seems like alot of damn money for being good at some pc games..

I think the only people that are paid to play are game reviewers. And persons who make money showing off content from video games, like some people on youtube

very very VERY, few people earn enough playing games to live on. only people who play for the likes of dignitas. a mate of mine earns money from games and being an ESL admin but he still has to have a job to support himself. if you want to earn bbig bucks you have to be amazing. theres a little money in it for less skilled people but not a lot at lan events or anything. try thing slike clanbase and enemy down. most of the time you will win server subscription. atm there are very few new pro teams coming out as a lot of the bigger companies already have their finger in another team. there is only one truly succesful gamer and thats fatal1ty

Fact of the matter is that it doesn't last long. He can be on 50k a year for half a year, then be jobless for the rest of that year wasting said money on keeping himself alive whilst he sits playing video games.

TL;DR - Video games are a hobby, not a career path.

Also, lots of people in the gaming industry playing professionally are paid very little. I know most of the professional players in CoD4 when I was playing weren't getting paid much.

I would never accept a deal that pays me to play games. I play them for fun and if I were paid to play them it wouldn't be fun anymore.

Thanks for the replies.

Another question:

I have never been to any LAN events, touranements ect. anywhere yet. The only games i really have played alot and have any appreciable skill with are the BF and COD games. I know that there is alot of action with Counterstrike, Quake, UT and Starcraft but i am not good at these games. Out of all the COD games i take it the only one that is going to have much LAN event presence would be COD4? Am i right?

This game is starting to get kind of old but it seems like it is still more active competition-wise than any of the newer cod games? Is it still popular enough where i wouldnt be wasting my time to buy it and play it again to try and get 'good.'?

I hope i am making sense to you here with my questioning.

Only CoD2 and 4 still have their competitive scenes.. 4 is more popular than 2.

As long as you enjoy it I don't see it being a waste of time.. don't look to get any money out of it though, it's not that simple. You wont get picked up by a pro team straight away, just find a clan or a bunch of friends and start a team, then enter a few free cups/tournaments and see how it goes.

cod4 is still the most popular due to the fact that it was easy to create promod for and it just works. whereas mw2, no dedicated servers. world at war is just terribad. and blops can't be modded yet. cod4 is still the best due to it being very bare bones.

I came secon in 1988 at the European gamining championships just missed on winning overall as the final game I had never played and I was way ahead of everyone else. I would have played the Asian champion in New York if I had won but there was no cash invloved.
With the games of today most gamers are very good so there is no need to pay someone to play for you. Also it is be better to release a beta and get collective results and more input and cheaper to pay people to test the gameplay.

BUT. If you do find a job that gets paid to game the good on you.

Compared to other career paths, it doesn't pay very well, and it nearly eliminates any other options.
