Core i7 970 or Extreme Sandy Bridge Makeover?

OK, so it's long past upgrade time for me, and I desperately need AES-NI because drive encryption is bottlenecking my system. The question for now is, do I just drop a Core i7 970 into my existing rig (ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution) and wait for Sandy Bridge to mature further, or try to put together a new system?

To complicate matters, I need a bunch of PCI Express slots, which limits the motherboards I can consider. I need at least one x16 (actual bandwidth) plus two x4 (actual bandwidth) slots. I would also LIKE a UEFI BIOS and SATA III for the future. The rig runs 24x7x365, often at 100% CPU for long stretches, so any overclock would be moderate. So I think a theoretical SB build would look like:

Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K

ASUS P8P67 WS REVOLUTION LGA 1155 Intel P67 / NVIDIA NF200 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory Model 996991

Obviously the 970 would be the cheaper option, and having six cores would be quite nice especially when I have a bunch of virtual machines going at once. But I don't know if the improved efficiency of Sandy Bridge would negate that. Or are they roughly comparable, as I've read elsewhere? If that's so, then I might do better to grab the 970 and wait for six-core SB processors.

Comments are welcome if you actually read all of that.

i would go with a 970 its cheaper for you at the moment also overclocked it should beat a 2600k. I think SB isnt a worthwhile upgrade for anyone with 1366, its best to wait for IB for a real upgrade.

Also just interested why do you need a x16 slot? an ssd card or something?

Wait, what's IB? I think I've been out of the loop for too long.

The x16 is for my video card; the x4 are for some other stuff I have which I'm not prepared to talk about.

Ivy Bridge is the next best thing after Sandy Bridge from Intel. Due out at the end of the year. Apparently.

Ah, now that I knew what to look for...

Looks like Sandy Bridge-E (on X79?) is going to be where it's at for me, and a i7 970 to tide me over until then. That LGA2011 socket is a monster, though. Wonder what it's going to be like to try to cool that beast?

Probably not much since it'll be 22nm architecture.
