Asus 1215B Ram/GPU questions

Thread Starter
An E350 zacate CPU with a 6310GPU, Ive been playing with the 1215B for about a week now and im planning on upgrading the ram. The first question I have is since it appears that the GPU gets its memory from the ram would it be possible to allocate more memory to the GPU? A program perhaps. Second, would it be overkill to get 8gb of ram? I play games on it like League of legends, magika and even crysis 2(at lowest settings and lower resolutions) I don't do any video editing or anything like that though. Finally, has anyone heard of overclocking on notebooks of this type? I am not going to try to overclock it to explode, I just love to tinker with overclocking and get a little more power when I need it, or underclock and get more battery life.

1.I've never heard of that, it is hard coded in the BIOS. However it could be the RAM allocated to the GPU is a % of all RAM, so upgrading that could upgrade the size alloted to the GPU. From tests apparently a big limit on the performance of the E350 is RAM speed - I suppose you now have 1066 RAM, you could replace it with 1333 and win some FPS.
2.8GB is overkill, the CPU is to weak for ever to be able to use that amount. Imho 2GB is enough, but 4 GB can't hurt.
3.I've seen on www.xbitlabs.com a test OCing an e350 on a desktop board - the CPU went up to 1.8, but the GPU got all the way to 750, too bad they didn't test the performance boost. I don't know how could it be done on a netbook, but something should show up soon.

Good to know the reason im assuming the ream is used by the GPU is because right now it has 2gb of ddr3 1333 but on system properties it says only 1.61 usable, my desktop has 8gb and shows all 8 as usable, I read while researching this notebook that the GPU uses the ram that is not usable, Im not sure if thats the case but my catalyst control center shows the GPU is using 384MB and that amount taken out of 2gb does leave around 1.61gb so from this point of view it makes some sense. I saw that on a 1215N with the nvidia ion GPU there was a program that let you dedicate more or less ram to the GPU, so I assumed it may be possible for the AMD as well.

Do yo know the porgram...

SetFSB is a overclocking tool that i think you can use on the 1215b to get the most of your ram and cpu...
doing it on my 1015pn right now testings...

also nvidia has a tool for the graphics ...

i WOULD advise you though to try and create some more vent ports
or at least put some copper (polished ) on the gpu, cpu, and gpuram..for heat purposes (it might raise your keys some but it deffinitly helps

thanks for info and links I decided to upgrade to only 4GB of ram and I got a 64GB SSD that should be good enough.

Hi there,
apologies for hijacking the thread... but can i quickly confirm that the 1215b will take up to 8gb of ram? I went on crucials website and it said that this model can only take 4gb, and so did the bloke on the end of the phone when i phoned up to confirm. At the same time, I've also heard this thing is upgradable to 8gb. Also, does anyone know what's the fastest speed ram it can take, ddr3-1333? Thank you!

Hi, first of all, yes it will work with 8GB, second you can't allocate more ram to the GPU and third due to a controller limitation it can't run higher than 1066mhz on netbooks (desktop E-350 are a different story), E-450's on the other hand can run @ 1333mhz.
