Windows 7 Activation issues...options?

OK, I had been wanting to reformat my Acer laptop, but I didn't want to order a recovery CD. I figured I'd follow the directions here: http://www.overclock.net/windows/753...ctivation.html create me a proper iso, and then do it. Well, it installed the right version of Windows 7, but when I went to activate it, I'm getting this message that: "The Windows 7 Home Premium key you typed is invalid for activation.".

So I figure I got to call MS support and activate it that way but after talking to two different people the second person told me since it was OEM it could only be installed one time, and that I needed to contact Acer. Is there a good number for MS to call for these situations where they can 'release' my OEM key so I can reactivate it?

Or is my only option to call Acer and tell them what I did, and see if there is anything they can do. If I have to, I'll order a recovery disc, but that is really NOT what I want to do, since this is my work computer and I go back to work Friday night, and will kill myself without being able to game. OK, a little harsh, but I will be bored to tears for over 10 hours...It wouldn't be a problem if I had the regular 30 days to activate it, but it says I only have three.

So did I mess up big time, or is there a fairly simple way to fix this?

Thet key you got from Acer was an OEM key and you most likely got the wrong version of windows. I would call Acer up and ask for a recovery disk. I know that guide says it will work with OEM but I doubt it really does.

Also windows gives you 30 days to activate. So you can call acer and get a disk while your on the the "free trial"

I got the RIGHT version of Windows, and in my OP is says for some reason I only have 3 days.

While a lot of people manage to get their OEM licenses re-activated, it is not allowed and the people who do are lucky. Your only legal option is to order a recovery disc or call Acer to see what they can do.

There is a thread about this on OCN, and I wouldn't be surprised if this thread was locked soon (that's what happened to mine).

As long as you installed the right version on your laptop your key should work.I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't.I re installed windows7 on an acer laptop just recently and it went off without a hitch.And I did it with an iso I burned myself.

When I mean right version of Windows I mean one that will work with OEM. As said above about it not being legal it is. This is the same computer with the same hardware.

OP I would try calling Microsoft and playing the ladder game. If one person doesn't do what you want then keep moving up to his supervisor. This may take some time but it will be less then waiting for acer. Try calling their main OS support line. I don't have this number off hand but I'm sure you can find it online. Ask for activation help and you should get someone.

I'm not breaking any rules seeing if anyone else went through this. There's nothing illegal about what I did either, since I'm using my key. I just apparently did it the wrong way. I think I'll try to reinstall for now, and don't enter any key, then when the recovery disc comes, reinstall again.

If you read what I said. You can call the Microsoft activation help line and get someone that will reset that key for you. Since you didn't change any hardware this is legal. It may take a couple supervisors to get what you want but it will happen.

Demented: Have you tried activating your copy of Windows over the automated telephone system? I've done this before - an OEM copy wouldn't activate through Windows, so instead, Windows gave me some numbers to punch into the telephone, and the machine on the other side gave me numbers back to give to Windows Vista.

Will maybe try this in a little bit when I have more patience and maybe a land line phone...something about my cellphone and overseas help desks...I can't hear/understand what these people are saying to me!

Yes, I did try it after I just reinstalled Win 7 without activating it. When I gave the automated thing the numbers, it transferred me to a person that told me it was blocked and they were switching me to customer service...I think that's what she said. But my cell was dying, and I figured I'd just call customer support in a little bit.
