Received 4870x2 replacement

I got home from work yesterday afternoon:

Nice packaging, but weak on the accessories. It only included a molex to 6 pin adapter. Not that that matters.

Crazy, asus-box eater:

I like how asus put the thin aluminum sheet instead of a hideous sticker.

Installed and computer wouldn't post

Bad feeling.

The culprit was a 6 pin cord from a tp650. I was in the process of sleeving the second 6 pin that came with my da800. See how they wired the ground to the 8 pin psu connection. The cables that came with my da800 are wired 6 to 6.

So I had to finish my sleeving job before I could play. Talk about sleeving with a purpose. Fastest I've ever sleeved.

Before I installed the new card I flashed the old one back to a 6950. The msi card oc's nicely so I was disappointed by the performance. Gains were underwhelming going from unlocked 950/1450 to 6950 stock crossfire.

Next thing I did of course was unlock them both. This didn't go smoothly for me with both cards installed so I installed them one at a time to flash.

I also deleted and reinstalled 11.4 previews at this point. Even though both gpus were working @ 99%, the performance was just not there, even if they were at stock.

So now with fresh drivers and 6970 bios, I left them at 880/1375 and tried another run of 3d11.Display driver stopped responding while trying to load the cpu/graphics combo test. Temps were fine.I took a wild guess and lowered the mem clocks to from 6970 stock to 6950 stock of 1250.

3d11 ran this time and I had a nice performance increase.

Scored 9000 something. unlocked, 880/1250.
Scored 6000 something before flashing and reinstalling drivers.
Scored almost 6000 with the msi card alone @ 950/1450 unlocked.

I haven't tested to see what the asus card can do on the core yet. I will also do the 6950 bios unlock so the mem isn't altered to see if that helps it to go higher on the memclock.

All in all, as we all know, you don't need two of these cards for 1080p. I wasn't planning on getting two of them but since asus sent one for my 4870x2, who would say, "No, I'm not putting this second 6950 in there."

The only games that the second card really makes a difference in is the ones you'd expect:

Metro 2033, crysis. STALKER COP responded nicely. That's all that I tested that made a difference.

@ 1080p, with my 2600k @ 4.5, I'm cpu limited in fallout:NV and bfbc2. Pretty much anything that isn't really shader heavy.

I'm going to tinker with the card some more, but I was hoping that it would be as beastly as the msi card. It's not. We'll see what I can get out of it. I may sell it, as two cards at lower clocks isn't much of an upgrade over the msi card at much higher clocks.

I guess this card could be refurbished, it didn't take to the 6970 bios very well, so it's certainly doesn't have golden mem chips. It was in a retail box, though.

I had to send it back twice. They sent it back to me once after doing nothing to it. The second time it went back, it was sent with the supervisor of the rma dept.'s name on the box. Maybe that helped? That and they gave me the runaround at first? It wasn't intentional, they just had someone testing it who really lacked the know-how(what little it takes). I got lucky and got on the phone with someone who was actually good at their job the second go round.
