Portal Games - Page 2

2 is WONDERFUL! However, the puzzles seem to be quite easy. (I am not very far, only about 2 hours in.. darn classes)

However, you pretty much HAVE to play the first one, otherwise IMO portal 2 would be lackluster.. and much of the humor would be lost. but since it is dirt cheap or free, do it!

I am going to come in with a different opinion. Don't force yourself to get into a game that you think you'll have no interest in just because of the hype. I bought Portal 2 with a pal as a 2 pack deal on steam, co-op gameplay was great--all 4 hours worth of it. Single player is eh, since I'm going at it by myself.

Portal 2 isn't like any other video game that is story driven, there is no story especially if you didn't play portal 1 like me. You simply go from one room to the next solving puzzles. The game isn't immersive in terms of realism, the graphics are good but there are hardly any effects. Its a 40 dollar indie game with good graphics basically. I can't sit through the single player at all. Compared to engaging, action packed, story driven games like Crysis 2, Dragon Age II, Starcraft II, Mass Effect 2, Dawn of War II, etc... Portal 2 is just lacking in a lot of content basically.

This is probably stemming from the fact that I never played Portal I or really got into the hype. Don't get me wrong its a great game for those who enjoy the whole portal devices and that type of puzzle solving.

But for me and anyone else who played a game called Darksiders (yes, they copied Portal), which had the portal gun mechanics, engaging puzzles with the portals, superb graphics with effects, a great story/progression, and awesome action/combat mechanics with epic bosses-- Portal just seems to be a short sell in terms of content.

IMO its a great casual game to play for 30 minutes at a time while you solve a puzzle room or two. As far a replay value--once you know how to beat the puzzles there simply is none.

There is your problem.

Portal has IMO way better storyline than most of the other FPSes out there.

I figured that was the case but about 3 hours into the single player of portal 2 the story consists of nothing but GLADOS insulting you and your parents, I find it more annoying than funny. I played games like ME2, DS2, DA2, without having played the first one and was still kept interested.

You probably would not have enjoyed Portal 1, either. For me, enjoyment of the games was due to: the humor, the atmosphere, and the joy of sending Chell flying through puzzles.

The first two seem to be largely dependent on having a certain cultural frame of reference involving dealing with haughty passive-aggressive types, especially in the educational realm. Or in New Jersey. Also, enjoying the satirization of said types would help.

And if video games need to have the added catharsis that comes with reducing simulated living bodies to simulated chunks of meat, you probably aren't going to be crazy about the gameplay, either.

Oh, and don't forget to read the comic in between the two games.
