[Hardware Zone] Intel's Z68 Approaches - ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Preview

We'll be covering the Z68 chipset in some detail in a future review, where things like Quick Sync and Intel Smart Response will get more airtime. From our brief benchmarking experience however, you can expect the scores on the Z68 to be competitive with the P67 (as expected), so it's not so much the performance, but the features that will be the main draw for this chipset.

Reports so far indicate a May 8th launch for this chipset, though it seems that retailers in Taiwan are already jumping the gun.

I'm curious to see what kind of performance the ssd caching thing brings.

I feel like everybody is pooping on Z68. Sure it's nothing new, but it's really what should have been released from the start. Assuming I didn't misunderstand, it looks like it will be able to switch between the IGP and a discrete GPU depending on the graphics load? That's pretty awesome! There's no need for my discrete GPU to be running the 80% of the time I spend doing office work and web browsing.

Seriously, though - If Z68 was released at the same time as P67, which would you pick?

SSD caching will not come near the performance of a dedicated SSD according to this article.

You have a nvidia 250 in your specs. Whats that 10w? Seeing as the z68 UD7 is a hundred more than the p67 version Im perfectly happy.

It's more the principal of being able to temporarily disable your GPU when it's not needed. I'm obviously not the only one who would appreciate it. I was thinking for the benefit of less noise than power savings. Sheesh... power savings - who cares about that?! Where are you getting any sort of $ figure and why would you put any faith in it weeks before the boards have even hit stores?

P67..i'd want to use my cards at their full potential..i paid for them for that purpose so why waste it??

Right around the corner... you mean 6 months?! Not to mention X79 will be cost prohibitive for many of us lowly mainstreamers...
