ASUS R3 Black Build

Thread Starter
Ok folks, this is a sanity check of sorts. I've pulled the trigger on my new build, and want to make sure I've got everything... System is as follows
  • CM HAF X Case
  • ASUS Rampage III Black Edition
  • CPU: INTEL i7 990x
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair H70 (Newish from old machine)
  • OS: WIN 7 Ultimate 64
  • Video: Radeon HD 9650 x2 (From HIS and MSI)
  • RAM: (12 GB from old machine, Corsair 1600's that are almost new)
  • Storage: 2x 128GB Crucial c300 SSD
  • Optical: LG 12x SATA BLU-RAY Burner
  • Power Supply: Enermax 1250W Galaxy EVO
  • LCD Displays (All except MIMO from old builds):
  • Asus 26" Wide HD (Primary)
  • Sony 19"
  • Hitachi 19"
  • MIMO 7" USB Touch Screen (be for system monitoring and 'bling')
*Funny, the Hitachi is about 8 years old, and has a much better display than the Sony, which is 4 years old
  • An assortment of case fans, extenders, and such...
  • Logitech Z5500's (went cheap, got on EBAY)

Now, before anyone asks "Why". I know I spent some coin, and this is a very enthusist based rig. Spent 20 years being a elex tech with the Navy, and now that I'm finally retiring, I realized, unless I have the equipment, I won't be chasing trons anymore. So, as well as being my retirement gift to myself, will be my project to work on when I get the zap to tinker.

Future plans include:
  • Build an external water cooling rig (may use old mini tower) for a complete water cooling solution. Will probably get the parts piece by piece, then function test outside of the machine.
  • Will OC both the CPU and GPU's (will proly go with the shader unlock and OC)
  • Swap the two 19" monitors for two 26 WS.
  • Will be getting at least one more GPU, may go with the 6990 for primary
So, what do you all think? Anything I'm forgetting? Anything I didn't consider? It's been a while since I got into building, and the research has been fun. I don't plan on tinkering with other OS's since I'm a hardware guy, and am all thumbs when it comes to software (unless I'm programming in Octal).

I do have a couple of questions, first, do I really need another optical drive? I can grab the LG from the other machine, or just get a dedicated reader for cheap. I would rather keep the rig as clean looking as possible. I'll be modding the bezle to hide the optical drive(s). Hence is also why I won't be getting any fan controllers.

Second question, since I have some bays open, any suggestions? I'm alright with leaving blank, or modding for another case fan. Wouldn't mind a functional and good looking audio controller. And if there are some 'unique' uses, I'm all ears.

Thanks all!

EDIT: I do plan on taking advantage of most of the ROG functions like ROG Connect. I have an old Fujitsu Tablet (bought in Singapore years ago) that will add to the 'bling' of my computer area and add function to monitoring my system. Have to get that cleaned up and working first.

I'm also looking for ideas to make the rig '2 year old' safe, as my 2yo is getting into exploring.

Everything looks good from here, and pricey too

I also had the same question about the optical drive. IF you really don't want to have one installed in your case then perhaps a USB attached portal optical drive will be the better option. I'll assume you won't be using the optical much anyway so a portable one should do just fine.

Honestly ever since I got my new rig about 6 months ago I've only used the dvd drive about 3 times. But it does come in handy when I really do need it.
