FAH as a stress testing tool

Hi all. I just built my sig rig and have been working on developing stable overclocks of the two GPUs and the CPU. Since FAH uses idle time processor cycles I figured this would be a good way to stress test my overclock rates.

I've been running my two GTX560Ti processors at an overclock of 925 MHz on the GPU clock, 1850 MHz on the shader, and 2100 MHz on the memory. Oddly enough, one of the boards came with a core voltage of 1.025 and the other was 1.000. The one with the higher voltage is running at 69C with 74% fan at full load on a GPU3 client and the lower voltage board is running at 68C with 72% fan.

The CPU is a Sandybridge Core i7 2600K that I have only been increasing the multiplier on so far. I have it running at 4.39 GHz right now with a multiplier of 44. Running the SMP client at full load I'm getting high temps on core 0 at 58, core 1 at 61, core 2 at 65, and core 3 at 61. On average each core is ranging from 57 to 61.

This is great because I've been waking up each morning, increasing clocks slightly, then run the clients all day.

Since starting this cycle a couple of days ago, I've logged over 40K points.

I've found these clients to be the most reliable stress testers of these processors out there. I'm getting a far more consistent 100% load from the SMP client on the CPU than I could from SuperPi!

Edited to add: This is all on air.

Yup... we're not big fans of Prime95/LinX/Furmark around here.

F@H is very SSE intensive, I though it was stated it was more stressful for a CPU in comparison to Prime95/LinX/etc.

While the FAH client will push your CPU to 100%, (and a great way to use up idle clock cycles AFTER you know you're stable) I can't say I recommend it for stress testing your overclock to determine if it's stable.

You have to remember that FAH is a collective project for academic and medical research. If you're using their software to test for stability, you're potentially passing them bad data that could compromise the integrity of their research.

some high temps on the 560's but i guess running sli would do that if they are close together im gettin 57degrees while folding @ 1.05v 950mhz and 63@990mhz @1.1v

That's good to know. I'll hold off with future overclocks until I'm sure they're stable. I've been taking things slow right now so haven't had an unstable overclock yet.

And I have the two boards separated by two slots, too! I may take control of the fans myself instead of letting them run auto. I have a spot for another intake fan right over the video cards, but one corner of a standard fan blocks the case from closing because of my Coolermaster V8 cooler.. I've ordered a Scythe 12mm thick fan to try and cool things better, but if that doesn't work I may switch to an H70 on the CPU and put in the best fan I can get for the intake over the video cards.
