ditchin my 295

Im thinking of getting rid of my 295, games just dont run like they used to in my eyes, bc2 plays choppy at times and same with crysis 2.

i was thinking of picking up the 580.

Newegg has it for 499.99-30 MIR and then I have a 25 dollar gift certificate that I havent used in 2 years lol. So it'll bring my price down to:

499.99-30-25= around 445?

I dont know if its worth it tbh. or should i get something else or just wait

I've got my eyes on going from my 285 to a 580 as well. They're old cards, two generations behind, if you want it and can afford it then go for it.

I had a GTX 295 and I do remember that card was not very good at keeping a consistent FPS while playing Crysis. I would see dips all the time.

A GTX 580 will provide you smoother game play, while also providing you a small performance bump. Overall it is about 15% faster.

If smoother game play is what you are looking for, you can also look at AMD's offerings. The 6950 is the best route right now. It comes to about 225 dollars after mail and rebate and that coupon.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-355-_-Product

With an unlock, a overclocked 6950 will come pretty close to a GTX 580's performance will costing half as much.

Thank you, I have never had ATI in my life, since I have heard nothing but problems with their drivers. I have read about unlocking them to a 6970 and am considering it now. Have their drivers gotten any better?

well you fold, so woudlnt a nvidia card be more beneficial? if so, the gtx 580 is a beast. if you want to save money , the gtx 560ti is a monster also for much less.

My 285 also runs hot. It gets around 80 when I fold, but I can't leave it on overnight because the fan is too loud around 60% speed and I sleep in the same room.

I say stick with Nvidia and go for the 580. I've got my eyes on either the Gigabyte Windforce(?) or MSI's Twin Frozr if I ever get the money together.

That I am not sure of first hand. I do know that people have generally agreed that these driver issues apply only to CF setups, not single card ones.

Yesterday, I had the chance to finally test out an ATI card (4870x2) for the first time in years.

Here is what I could tell from it.

Although, the scaling was excellent, the micro-stuttering was pretty evident during benchmarking. While I played BC2, the 4870x2 provided a smooth game play experience. I also ran Red faction 3, and that game also ran seamlessly.

However, do realize that this is a 2-3 year old card. I also think that ATI's CC interface is as ugly as sin. Coming from NVCP, the CC is a major step back in user friendliness. That is just me though.

If money is not an concern, I would go the Nvidia route especially if folding is an concern. $449 for a GTX 580 is a huge chunk of change, and quite frankly, it should be priced a lot lower.

If i do get the 580 should i sell my 295 or use it as a phsyx card? I know i will want to fold on it still.

Thats fair. Just a friendly reminder that you can only use one core on the GTX 295 for physx. The other will stand idle.

Folding on the GTX 295 will be a good idea as long as you do not mind having mini microwave inside your computer.
