am3 socket help?

Thread Starter
ok i have an asus motherboard that supports the am3 socket

look @ my sig rig down low and check out my cpu

its stock @ 3.40

either i overclock it so i can get my 6950 and unlock it to 6970
OR
i replace this cpu (if i can) with a faster am3 socket cpu.

any help?
not sure if that makes any sense, just ask (:

get a 6950 because a phenom ii X6 wont make a difference because no games actually use all 6 cores. maybe if your mobo supports AM3+ in the future you can get a bulldozer cpu but at the moment its not worth upgrading your cpu.

Whats the performance difference between the 6950 and 6870? The 69xx has more stream processors but the 6870 has a higher core clock.
The 6950 is faster, although a OC'd 6870 can tie and sometimes beat a stock 6950.

Yeah bro, cuz you can't OC/unlock the 6950.

Also from what I've seen; 6870 OC does not beat 6950 stock.

For the most bang for your buck, I advise getting a 2 gb reference 6950 and unlocking it. Also, you might want to overclock your cpu a bit to eliminate any potential bottleneck. As for upgrading the proc, you really don't need to. Most of the stress in gaming is on the gpu.
