I don't mind the stagnation of graphics to be honest. I would much rather focus on improving the standard PC resolution to at least near-retina display quality. That would be amazing.

I don't mind this. I'd actually like to see them kind of leap frog each other so that we get an updated console every ~2 years. That way we constantly have newer tech

Though it'd piss off developers not being able to port games over...

Those console IMHO do not have that much life in them, not if you want to keep up with the gamers needs.

Also I doubt MS will call there next Xbox ''Xbox720'' if they do..that is the worst name ever as it means nothing lol.

It has little to do with consoles and has more to do with the nature of the PC platform.

No one wants to do anything new because it cost too much and there is no guarantee that it will be profitable especially given that piracy on PC is more crippling than on consoles.

Then how do you explain the PS2? 11 years old and still selling ~100k units a year in American alone...

When the Xbox and PS3 came out, they had pretty good hardware for the day. the PS3 gpu is basically a nVidia 7800 GT, and the top card when the Ps3 launched was the 7900, so only about half a year behind.

EDIT: Actually the 8800GTX came out like the same week as the Ps3, but cost as much as a whole PS3 would..so yeah..

That's the whole point of consoles holding things back, it was decent hardware back then. Just like the new consoles will be decent upon release, their hardware will rapidly age after release. I think the gap between consoles and PC's will only widen, even more than it has this generation.

I think this is good for the console gaming market. Devs can't make multi-platform games for all three consoles without dumbing it way down on the Wii. If the Wii 2 is slightly more powerful than the other two consoles, they can still port games across all three platforms. We might actually see more games. Sony lost a lot of money early on this gen, so I'm not surprised they want to stretch the PS3's lifecycle as much as possible. But I'm kinda surprised MS doesn't want to compete with the Wii 2 by releasing a new console.

Ok let me rephrase. It will not survive that long in the enthusiasts eyes. PS2's still sell for the kids and general gamers. While there are more general gamers than enthusiasts, there are still enough to make a difference to the pockets of companies like Sony and MS. I would not consider buying a console this late in the game anyway. Not when I can get a PC. More expensive yes. But up to date, not to mention avoiding the costs of multiplayer.
