[Kotaku] Microsoft And Sony Targeting 2014 For New Consoles - Report - Page 3

The wii2 will just wind up like the Dreamcast. although the Dreamcast is the greatest console ever made.

You see, when I talk to ma peeps IRL, they dont really seem to care about the next iteration. For them, standards of graphics etc are still increasing, as devs get more comfortable with the hardware. Wether that sentiment will remain for 3 more years is debatable, but I also wonder if the effect of a hardware cieling for a while will force developers to innovate more to stand out, rather than pumping out marginally better graphics. That in my opinion, is a good thing indeed.

However, PC hardware would be..light years ahead of consoles, leading to possibly more obvious holding back of PC standards in terms of power alone. Not a good thing. Like I said though, if that forces games to up their GAME and not their GRAPHICS, that is not the worst thing to ever happen.

EDIT: IMO, I get the Dreamcast comparisons, but really, the reasons behind the Dreamcasts descent was not purely due to hardware.

No one wants to do anything new because it cost too much and there is no guarantee that it will be profitable especially given that piracy on PC is more crippling than on consoles.

Then how do you explain the PS2? 11 years old and still selling ~100k units a year in American alone...
It's not piracy, it's marketshare...The number of people who own high end rigs is significantly smaller than those who bought rigs 3-5+ years ago. Hell...there are people still playing with direct x8.1

This. The snow is only starting to fall on the issue of the consoles being dated. Hearing 2014 might prompt more the daring and/or willing consolers to think about the PC platform.

Blue Ray 2? and 1080p? While the PS3 are function the same here. That is not you very likely Sony. But then Apple already stepping in console. Knowing Microsoft and Sony only care for market share.

And Kotaku are the one spamming ehh? Lol.

2014: The PS4 and XBox Next are rumored to be running on specialized AMD/Nvidia graphics capable of 1080P resolutions, 3D graphics, and DX12 support.

2014: The PC market is booming with rumors of the Nvidia GTX M1 Abram and AMD Radeon HD 9999 capable of 4K resolutions, the obvious multi-monitor support, the obvious 3D, the ability to run your entire computer and act as an SSD. Also, support for the upcoming DX13 is an obvious after thought.

2014: Game devs play the graphics down to console games, once again.

2014: WII consoles across the world continue to collect dust as Nintendo tries to figure out just WTPH they are doing.

2014: UrbanSmooth puts the finishing touches on his new killer gaming/benching rig dubbed 'Maniacal Surround Fury' running across 5 seemless bezel 32" 4K resolution OLEDs, powered by 6 Nvidia/AMD GPUs, an Intel iSawWhatYouDidLastSummer X1 running at a cool 8.5GHz on H²O, 8GB of Cas 4 DDR4 in Quad-Channel, Windows Great Maximum Platinum 128-bit, with a 1TB SF1200 SSD.
