i guess i was speaking generally about 1366 chips (the 970,980x,990x chips have 6 cores)

x58 has more pci express lanes than p67 but unless you plan on running more than 2 gfx cards there's no point for your build to go x58

@ CrazzyRussian
integrated graphics? wait... are the SB like the i3s?

@ compuman145
he knows how to OC since he's the one that taught me how to OC but he just doesn't wanna OC it. honestly, he can build it for himself but he knows how much I enjoy making computers

@ selectstriker2
the only choices i'm looking at are the 2600 and 960
and he'll be running a single gpu.
maybe in the far future he might get another gpu but he's a single gpu person just like he doesn't like OCing.

btw can anyone give me some decent mobos for the 1155? thanks!

Basically the newer i5 and i7, can be overclocked much higher than the older, and the only difference between the new i5 and i7 is hyperthreading, which means that each core can act like two, giving 8 possible threads overall.

Now the older i7s were of two different kinds, there was the i7 860/870 etc... which were based on the i5 platform but with added hyperthreading. But the i7 920/950 etc....where a different chipset which also used triple channel ram, and have a higher amount of pcie - lanes (for graphics cards) which would get the most out of 3 and 4 graphics card solutions. But there where a few high end motherboards released for the similalar i5/i7 chips which added more pcie lanes to use more graphics cards also.

Basically 4 threads is enough, 8 is rediculous for everyday use and gaming becasue you just wouldnt utilize them, and triple channel ram is also non essential.

If I where you, explain this to your friend and get him one of the new i5 processors, the 2500k to be exact, and overclock it to 5 GHz for him with a nice big cooler. Explain to him the i7 is no better for him, and his chip is practically as fast as they come. And he doesnt want th extra pcie connectivity of last gen i7s because your insane going three and four card setups as the returns deminish.

Edit: Sorry im a bit late with this but hope it helps simplfy matters

Any board which is sli / crossfire compatible, with about 12+2 VRMS for nice stable current are all good. Gigabyte and Asus are supposed to be the best and do everything essential without going crazy expansive
