Quick & Easy RAM Upgrade Question

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Gonna get right to it;

I have this ram
I want to upgrade to 8GB of ram, what is the best upgrade I can do and get a good value for my price?

My friend is telling me to get a PC2 8500 since its cheaper, it will be downclocked to the mushkin's PC2 8000 anyway (weird that 8500 is cheaper than 8000)

Thanks ahead of time
PS: this is what I was looking at earlier

If you can afoard it go for these

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-166-_-Product

Get 2 sets of those. I prefer Crucial ram however I can't seem to find any 1066 crucial ram

If you value overclocking you should go with 2x1GB in addition to your 2x2GB. Many 2x1GB kits are also single sided.

In my P5Q-E I use 2x2GB + 2x1GB (single sided) Crucial Ballistix PC6400 4-4-4-12-2.0v.. They are rock stable at 1168MHz 6-5-6-15-1.96v... Overclocks excact the same as using 2x2GB. And do not hinder rest of the overclocking at all.

Seen this in other boards too. So it's really not worth going 8GB RAM. In my case I could not settle for 4GB, which really is enough, so I ordered those 2x1GB kit, for a total of 6GB. Because I knew it would also overclock good.

I've also tested 2x2 + 2x1GB config where the 2x1GB sticks also were double sided, still did alot better then 4x2GB...

I also have 2 more 2x2GB sticks of this RAM. But running 4x2GB totally destroys the overclock. They will only do 1:1 FSB:Mem when using 8GB. Also, in many cases the CPU will need a little more V-core when 4x2GB RAM. Many motherboards struggles using 8GB. Like my P5Q Pro Turbo. Totally hopeless with 8GB RAM. Tried two different kits... Cannot overclock at all with this config.

Take out two sticks, go into bios - be sure to sett RAM timings manually. Also you could try to relax them. Save and turn off system. Install all sticks and try again

I also want to include, I'm in the process of RMA'ing my GTX 580, so I popped in my older 8800 GTS 512, but I doubt that has any effect on it. (same exact drivers)

I'm going to attempt to relax the timings now, the voltages should be automatically adjusted to match, going to go for 5-5-5-15 (down from 5-5-5-12)
