First time HDR photos. (56k beware!) - Page 5

Oversaturated HDR is something that's fun once in awhile for lets say graffiti or if your looking for that rendered look I find in housing it just looks wrong.
One point of an HDR is to gain Dynamic Range where your camera lacks it by pulling details out of the lows, mids, and highs in the picture to give it a realistic effect.

Here's an example of 5 shot Ferrari Italia now I know the sharpness is rather high but there was nothing I could do to change that and maintain details.

Also for the pixel peepers out there they may notice a Ghost of a guy that I didn't see until now.

I gotcha, I definitely agree with all the comments about over toning. And maybe I should have done more research on HDR before processing these and posting them on here. But I was excited to go out and shoot for the first time with a DSLR.

But to receive comments like "just don't do it" to a new interest... Seems like you're going to be a great parent some day. There is no need to be negative and discouraging, especially to the interest of photography. We have enough of those people already..seems like a trend of its own.

It's the nature of the beast with photography. Everyone's a critic. I don't know what software/method you're using for your HDR's, but you ought to look into exposure blending - much more realistic (pretty easy to do with software like Photomatix). It gives you the expanded dynamic range without the craptacular tone mapping.

well, its a valid suggestion. super tonemapped HDR really is over used and is as trendy as underglow are on cars. hes not telling you to stop taking photos, or get out of photography.

No offense to those who like them, but this is why HDR has a bad taste. because people dont understand what a High Dynamic Range image is supposed to look like.

They're boring because the subject is boring. You can't just slap 3 exposures together to "make it exciting".

Again, over-sharpened, over-saturated, and CA all over the place. And please, don't post full-size images like that -- it makes it more difficult to look at your photos, and easier to pick out small things that would never bee seen in a print.

The first two, aside from being a completely banal scene, are flat and lack much contrast. Merges, blends, whatever you do, are difficult to do right, which means making them look not like an obvious HDR.

These days I don't do them, too much work for just occasionally good results. Expose for the highlights and lift the shadows in post is what I usually do when I need more DR.

Ok I found a more interesting shot. And didn't over tone it. Is this one a little better?

That doesn't look like more dynamic range to me.
