We get about 100kb/s, but it can dip as low as 10kb/s because we are on the most overcrowded exchange in East London, Poplar. It's the next big one to be upgraded as it's so bad, O2 refused to physically connect us as there were no spaces left.

At home, in the country I get about 820kb/s... but then again:

Home Exchange serves approx:

640 residential premises
48 non-residential premises.

London Home Exchange serves approx:

31,853 residential premises
1,270 non-residential premises.

Not true, there's an exchange near me that's got 1.9k and that's got LLU.

The exchange across the river has 5.5k and that's got several LLU suppliers and is getting BT FTTP in December 2011.

I am so glad I live in the UK for broadband as there is SO much competition that it means the speeds and quality will keep on improving. While yes we have catching up to do, I am so glad our broadband is not monopolized like in the US/CANADA.

Yeah, the competition is great here, so many different companies. Now, with Fujitsu entering the competition and more exchanges going LLU, it can only improve.

I have to give the Government and EU credit for driving through both money and plans to improve the UK and Europe's internet infrastructure. It is the future of business and commerce.

I'n with VM about 3 yeras now , started with 20MB and upgraded to 50MB when it rolled out , now they say 100MB is coming to my area.
I,ve tested my connection against various companies O2,SKY , BT and others
and not hyping up VM but nothing comes close , i can literally max out the advertised speed.

I would kill for your internet.

I don't even want tot test to Chicago.

I suspect my ISP is throttling my internet connection as I could previously max out at around 200kb/s but now I get a max of 80kb/s with it sometimes peaking out at 110kb/s.

Thread Starter
To be fair on Virgin Media, we get the advertised speeds most of the time, even at peak times. The problem I have is that I download a fair amount of stuff and they throttle pretty badly, especially as we're still on the old "M" 10Mb instead of the "L".

Even watching about half an hour's worth of BBC iPlayer HD is enough to bring the speed down to 2.5Mb/s for 5 hours.

2.5MB/s is your internet throttled badly... On a good day I can stream 360p on youtube... I hate my building for internet.
