Not sure if i'm being bottlenecked... - Page 2

If you can keep your GPU pegged in those games you've got nothing to worry about. I was really happy to see my 570 pegged in GTAIV after hearing how most people are CPU limited in that game. Even though I knew I wasn't bottlenecked it was still cool to see that. Just remember that your performance in game is a sliding scale of the balance between CPU and GPU, meaning you can almost always shift the "bottleneck" to the GPU by turning up the eye candy.
Good advice.

I just thought I'd also point out that because bottlenecks are totally 'situational', Portal 2 is a perfectly fine game to use to figure out if you're being bottlenecked, just as any game is. It's just that the result only applies to Portal 2, at the particular settings you're running it at.

What I mean by this is that there's no such thing as 'being bottlenecked' in any absolute/definitive sense ... solely based on your hardware. It always depends on the combination of the game/bench, the settings, and the hardware.

So if there's no evidence of a CPU BN when maxed out on Portal 2, then you're not BN'ed when maxed out in Portal 2. However, if you DO see evidence of BN on when maxed out on GTAIV, then that's the situation when maxed out on GTAIV.

But every situation ... indeed, every FRAME ever rendered by your rig is a new opportunity for either the CPU or the GPU to act as the limiting performance factor.

Increasing the settings acts to reduce the frequency and severity of CPU bottlenecking by the simple action of lowering the FPS. Less FPS = less requests for data from the CPU for any given unit of time = less likelihood of the CPU acting as a limiting factor to performance.

Also ... cpu usage not being at 100% doesn't mean anything unless you have a single core processor. You can still be CPU bottlenecked at much lower %'s, very easily.

The way to determine the degree of CPU BN's is to do benchmarks before/after a CPU overclock and compare the % increase in FPS/% increase in clocks. The closer that ratio is to 1, the more bottlenecked you are at the LOWER of the two cpu clocks.

And the v-sync advice is spot on, of course

not sure what you mean by "pegged" ? lol
I mean maxed out at 98-100% by pegged. I usually hear it referring to tachometers when the engine is turning at max RPM and is bouncing at the redline. I guess the closest definition I could give is "constrained to a maximum amount by a limit of some sort" like in this case the maximum of 100%. FYI do not google pegged, I wish I had just said maxed out now.
