Can't seem to get Oblivion over 30fps?

Thread Starter
I have an HIS 6850 with Q6600 quad and I can't seem to play Oblivion over 30 fps. I get around 20-30 fps. Is that normal?
Probably not normal, are you running any mods? Also, I think some performance problems were fixed by the unofficial patches, it fixes a lot of quest bugs anyways so go grab them, just do a quick google search.

The game could sometimes be CPU bound because it only uses 2 threads I think.

Yeah cause I can run Crysis 2 on Very High, Just Cause 2 just about the highest.. It seems weird. I do have the Natural Environment mod but I don't think that's suppose to decrease performance much. And I have the alive water mod. That's just about all I have graphically.. And I do have the Unofficial Oblivion patches.

Might want to check out the various Oblivion.ini changes that are supposed to help. Helps mine for sure...I usually get 45-50 FPS with the Natural Environment mod (including weather), the lighted windows, Martigen's stuff, Qarl's...etc.

Check if maybe you have Vsync on or frame lock on, I think Oblivion has an option to lock to 30 FPS.

You should be getting much better performance, I can get 50 FPS, with my old card with Quarls Texture Pack III, albeit at a lower resolution, but much weaker card.

Try lowering the shadows settings in-game; this seems to have the biggest impact. Specifically the sliders for shadows int and shadows ext. I was running dual 5970s and still ran into areas with problems. The game's engine just isn't that optimized.

With that setup you should be maxing it with pretty much any mod, not sure what the problem might be.

what fps do you get without mods?

This is very important too, keep those sliders down.

Give it a try, but it should not matter, I have them all maxed out on my rig and it is much less powerful then yours, maybe the game engine just has trouble with 1080?

With everything working well, I've tried tweaking those shadow sliders, and somewhere between 1/3 of the way and 1/2 things grind to a crawl...
