Athlon II x4 or Phenom II x4?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at prices on Newegg.....I can get either for 109... the Athlon 645, or Phenom 840...

What is the difference here? Neither have an L3 cache..... and only 100mhz difference I see...
Phenom is newer
I would go for the Phenom (which technically should be an athlon 2 with no L3 cache) its the same price, same TDP and 100Mhz faster.

Edit: from what I have seen from reviews the Phenom 2 should clock to about 3.8Ghz

There's nothing wrong with the Athlon. I would go with that as there is not a big difference

another vote for the faster phenom, although they are pretty much just the same CPU with different branding

Don't get either. The "Phenom" II X4 840 is not a true Phenom. It's based on the Propus die instead of the Deneb die and therefore has no L3 cache and also over-clocks worse. I'd suggest paying $5 more and getting a real Phenom II X4 with 6MB L3 cache: Link

Yes, it's clocked lower stock, but it is a superior processor. If you plan on OCing this shouldn't matter since you'll probably get 4GHz out of the 925 and only 3.6-3.8GHz out of the Athlon II X4 645 or 840.

The 840 is essentially an OC'd 645. If you open CPU-z the 840 shows 645.
