+1 on the 970.

I love mine

Also there's a damn good price on a Rampage III Extreme in the marketplace.

So wait, does he already have the MOBO, or is he buying that too?

If he's buying the MOBO + CPU, then I would highly recommend a 2600K instead.

Not only is it cheaper, but higher overclocking room:

Don't know. I was just letting him know, and for CAD I would still go 970.

ha ha - I asked you about the OP, can you ask him for me please?

For new rigs, I'd still go with the 2600K @ 4.5 - 4.8 it will be beastly.

Plus, I'm no CAD expert, but wouldn't a 570 for example be better because of CUDA?

Haha, I have none of the components yet, so I'm still open to some swaying on different things.

I went Radeon cause in the past I've fried 5 Nvidia GPU's. I've had 3 Radeon's and never friend one, even though at one point I actually tried to overload it. So in my books thus far the Radeon's have proven more durable - but if people think the Nvidias are a bit more robust now then I'm willing to jump ship again... Wasn't really expecting to need a new computer until BOTH mine broke within a day of each other, so I'm kind of rushed and haven't had too much of a chance to shop around. =/

Is there much point in going one step further to a I7 990X?

If I remember correctly, programs like AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, etc. are accelerated in the 3D department but by DirectX, not CUDA and its only to improve the look of the 3D model on the screen

IMO, for new rigs, 1366 isn't the way to go right now. ( This coming from a 1366 user )

The 2600K overclocks really well, 4.4 is guaranteed with the STOCK cooler, 4.7 - 4.8 24/7 on AIR is pretty common for these chips.

If you went with a 970, you're looking at $600 + $379 for the RE3 Extreme ( which is overkill for a single card set up anyway )

2600K - $315
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-070-_-Product

ASUS P8P67 PRO - $189
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-703-_-Product

Or the Deluxe:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-701-_-Product

Add 8 GB RAM - $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-428-_-Product

With the money saved, you can add an 80GB SSD for your Boot and Most used Apps:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-031-_-Product

That's $785 for CPU + MOBO + Ram + SSD vs $979 for the 970 + MOBO.

Plus I recommend you get better storage drives like these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-185-_-Product

Price / Performance SB wins by a mile.

Go with a 950 and overclock it. But if you have the money, go for the 970. Thing will be one hell of a beast being 6 cores.

Read sig BTW

You'll get the fastest performance from an i7-2600K. Especially overclocked. 1366 is outdated architecture now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.629265

When is it comes to the CAD side of things is it better? I would say a OC'd 4.1 970 would perform the 2600K?
