Not sure the purpose of TRI SLI or Quad SLI, if your looking for raw GPU power then the 2x 590's would be better as its 4 physical cores. However scaling actually may be better with 3 depending on monitor resolution. You should be at 2560 x 1920 or higher for that kind of power.

For CUDA or CAD & 3D you should really look into a workstation card..

For a non gamer your awfully headstrong on a gaming multi gpu setup...

Just want to be sure you understand that..

Hes looking at 2560 x 1600 as the resolution.
3 x 512 cuda cores (workstation would be far more stable for rendering in Archi and Engineering but most good quadros are way out of budget)
the 3gb frame buffer vs the extra core makes me wonder which would be better to get, I'd say tri for scaling purposes alone, but if quad is better then by all means put a build for the OP from pcgears.com

Haha, completely understandable.

My last 5 computers have been gaming oriented entirely.

The overclocking, tweaking, benchmarking is a bit of an addiction - I've been out of it for a while but these GTX 580 cards look like fun! Especially with some of the clocks on the 2600s!

I only do a a few large renders once every few months, the rest of the time its normal usage.

I'd rather have a full blown weapon in all regards than a tailored one if you get what I mean - rather the high performance road car than the freak tuned F1 - at least the road car can drive over a speed hump without damage =P

I understand the 6 core will be better in render respects, however rendering is only 1 point of architecture, thats to generate a visual interpretation of the final design. The process of most of the work involves the CPU, and the cost of a quadro card is expensive, considering it is a tailored card specific for rendering.

I just don't want to spend a lot of money on an entirely render-tailored rig.

I want it to have the capacity to assist in decreasing render times, etc. but I don't want it to sacrifice overall performance - and given that both the CPU and GPUs of the GTX and I7 2nd Gen are both cheaper alternatives than the tailored 6 core and quadro, it seems the more viable option

Thus, the change

Oh also I forgot (use inventor and autocad when rendering for different things and hobbies/majors) the VRAM on your card will be heavily used (you know besides the actual ram which funnily enough for you needs to be 16gb for those large renders you do). It's why the quadro 6000fx is 6gb! Well that and multiple monitor and stereo 3D. But yup the phantoms frame buffer will help a great deal.

Should account for everything. I know the MCP 355 can power all those blocks at once but I'd keep the gpu loop sepereate since it's a 580 tri sli.
Gpu loop: Non ref EKs (comparability guide says the match to the Gainward Non refs) + MCP 355 + DDC top plus res + rx 480 + rx 240

Chipset + CPU (massive restriction for the win) : ud7 block + XSPC rasa + same rad and pump + top as above.

TJ07 can hold 2 x 480s internally right? That's what I've seen. But can it hold those rads with dual face fans?

Also to OP: you don't have to get the Revo drive, its just an extra you can add later and makes you not have to wait to use your pc since its an insane speed SSD, and a good sized OS boot drive

Well I would say it depends on ambient & airflow. I see no need for a 480 RAD.

I would suggest running it all with a 655 vario, set it with 2 RX240's. Cant tell if & how they would set up in a case without physically seing it..

My suggestion would be this.
MCP655 vario - RX240 - XPSC RASA - RX240 - GPU BLocks - Res - back to pump. Use all 1/2" ID tubing with just distilled water, if you want color get colored tubing...

The water will never be lower than room temp, its impossible without chilling it, which cannot be done because of condensation..

So the rad is only going to do so much.

if your going with 2 loops go with 2 355's, otherwise just separate the rads and run 1 655 pump.

Pain to get all set up and all the air out Im sure, but it will be much more efficient I think..

Off topic kinda... I wish I had the OP's $ LOL

Kinda up to the OP if it is worth it, in the first post he did say the machine would mainly be for CAD software, can the software take advantage of 12 threads?
If so, the 970 would be faster although more expensive, depends if the productivity is worth it to him.

It was disussed in throughout this thread. OP will primarly be gaming, and only be doing hour long renders every few months. The i7 2600k at 5ghz has been shown to bench similar to an i7 980x in rendering times, and cost much less while giving better frame rates in games. It seems a waste of money to purchase a system based on the i7 970, even if it is the main topic, throughout this thread OP and other users have given up on the i7 970. OP has decided to take a general use machine mainly on gaming, and that is what this is. With 3 x 512 cuda cores for cuda accelerated rendering (iray for ex) as shown by NVIDIA's marketing, it should be plenty. The 3gb frame buffer is comparable to the enormous frame buffer on the 6000 quadro at 6gb, and it only goes to show how these rendering programs will employ the use of all 3gbs instead of a 590 mirrored 1.5gb. The 2560 x 1600, is optimal resolution to use either the 590 quad or the 580 tri, but with the huge frame buffer, and scaling issue, it seems to make more sense to use the 580 tri sli,and such games as Metro (consuming 1.7gb and up on that resolution) or crysis with HD texture packs solicits the use of such a large frame buffer with such a powerful system. i7 970 cannot clock nearly as high as the 2600k, while offering marginally higher performance in rendering and possibly gaming as the 2600k deeming it a waste of money.
