FTW, whats the difference tho in running stock vs 4.0 vs 5.0 on a single 480 or 580 is what I am wondering...

Is the scaling the same in 3D?? Someone posted that a 2500k @ 4.0 & 570 vs 2500k @ 4.8 & 570 was barely even noticable..
http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/...l#post13220429 that is his 4.8 runs, his 4.0 runs are on page one... The only difference seems to be min FPS go up a little..

If there is little difference from 4.0 - 4.8 on a single 570, then chances are its a gpu bottleneck I would assume
I'll put the SB rig together & try it out now.

HDD: Vertex 3 240GB SSD (OS & Main programs)
HDD: 1TB Media Storage
HDD: 500GB Storage
HDD: 250GB Storage
HDD: 500GB Storage (The above three HDD's are full of crap from other builds)
GPU: Radeon 6970
RAM: 6GB DDR3 1333mhz
Mobo: Rampage III Extreme
Sound Card: X-FI Titanium Fatality Champion
Optical: Samsung Bluray Writer/Reader
Cooling: 2 intake & 2 exhaut fans + Watercooling for the CPU

I use to play games a lot, but am lucky if I play a game once every couple of months.

I do a lot of multi-tasking (50+ browser windows in opera, 15 word documents, 30+ PDF files) at a time is pretty routine for me.

I'm getting the fatality pro sound cause I have AKG K701 headphones which are notoriously difficult to drive when you want to listen to music LOUD.

The computer will be used for CAD related softwares.

I will overclock the cpu, but not hardcore like most people here

Its more than likely this will also be used as a server at a later point in time.

Motherboard:
Why did you go with the asus rampage 3 extreme? It has features you wont even use and from the looks of things you are either a programmer or someone who does their job online. You said you rarely have the time to play games so I just don't see why you would go with the asus rampage 3 extreme, if you don't have time to play a game than you wont have any time to even look at the board lol.
For a motherboard, maybe you can consider the asus rampage 3 formula.

Ram:
Why did you go with 6GB DDR3 1333mhz, for intel i7 900 series cpu's? You should go for at least 6GB DDR3 1600mhz triple channel memory.

GPU:

Dont go with an amd radeon 6970, go for an nvidia gtx 580. The GTX 570 alone beats the amd 6970. The amd 6970 beats the gtx 570 at resolutions of 2560x2048 because of its 2GB ram. Other than that the gtx 570 has phyx, and cuda and has better performance is games and in other applications.

Just did a few runs of 3dmark03, first at stock 3.4Ghz, the 4.0, then 5.0, leaving the gpu & memory clocks the same just upping the cpu multi. 03 does increase framerates with cpu speed, some of the 4 graphics tests more than others. Nature doesn't change a whole lot, just a few FPS.
3.4Ghz

4.0Ghz

5.0Ghz

For actual game benchies think all I have here is Crysis & Mafia II...

If you have vantage or heaven it would be better than 03, also go with native resolution. The low res skews reality as nobody will ever be at that resolution.
Crysis & Mafia II are good too, just use your normal gamin res if you dont mind....

The thing Im trying to figure out is if a 4.0 to 5.0 cpu change is different when compared to a single 480/580 compared to a dual gpu...

The way his tests were done suggests that in real world use, at native resolution the added 1GHz cpu is not doing much because the GPU has been maxed out at 4.0... he was on a 570, which is a pretty powerful card...

However I trust your testing a bit more

I ran this the same way, all tests at 1920x1080 & just changing the cpu multi, memory & gpu clocks stay the same.
3.4Ghz

4.0Ghz

5.0Ghz

Then I added a 2nd gpu & ran the same

3.4Ghz

4.0Ghz

5.0Ghz

Seems the single gpu is maxed out at 3.4 really, if you look at FPS & GPU score thats the best score..

On a dual gpu however the added CPU MHz is shining....

Thanks for that FtW.... Gona use my $ for a new gpu or 2nd 470....
