I7 950 - i7 960 - i7 970 - which!??! - Page 3

For his situation multitasking is a must. Take the i7 970 in this case.

Also for monitors consider a Dell U2711H or u3011h or an HP Zr30w

Sb is good for gaming and everything 4 core optimized. But rendering times are benefited by an i7 970 at 4.5 ghz vs a 2500k at 4.8

Also get the new gigabyte boards. The G.1 series or the new OC board. They could get a 990x to 5ghz. Would give you a lot of benefit and decrease render time.

Just so everyone knows, my budget is ~$4000 for the PC and ~$1K for the screen.

The computer will take at times some enormous loading, I've piled an OC'd I7 920 to take over 8 hours on a single render, thus I've opted for a watercooled option tongue.gif

The alternate build option after reading here could be something like:

CPU: I7 2600k
HDD: Vertex 3 240GB SSD (OS & Main programs)
HDD: 1TB Media Storage
HDD: 500GB Storage
HDD: 250GB Storage
HDD: 500GB Storage (The above three HDD's are full of crap from other builds)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 580 (x 2)
RAM: 6GB DDR3 1333mhz
Mobo: Rampage III Extreme
Sound Card: X-FI Titanium Fatality Champion
Optical: Samsung Bluray Writer/Reader
Cooling: 2 intake & 2 exhaut fans + Watercooling for the CPU

Obviously the changes are outlined in bold.

I won't downgrade on the SSD cause once you load up Rhino, the full adobe suite, W7, Word, Auto-Cad and a couple others you end up with 100GB taken up already!!

Question still is, the 2600 or the 970??

I don't mind going either, as both systems come in at roughly the same price, give or take $50, lol.

The screen =
HP ZR30W

Keep everything the same except get an i7 970 and the Gigabyte G.1 guerrilla or assassin those are great OC boards. 4.8 on your chip I bet

If he's buying the MOBO + CPU, then I would highly recommend a 2600K instead.

Not only is it cheaper, but higher overclocking room:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=157

Why would you recommend a 4 core over a 6 core for multi tasking? He is not gaming or overclocking( at least thats not his main use)

Dude people on here are like parrots ! They will always recommend the popular item of the day ie 2600k ( the bandwagon is a coming) But i believe in your case you should get the 6 core for multitasking! ( just my opinion) 1366 is still a supported socket do some research!! Because, i know for a fact if i posted a thread saying im buildng a computer and stated my needs as clearly needing a 6 core , people would still recommend me something i dont need ( like in your case a 2600k ) because its newer and thats all people recommend on here till something else comes out!!!

I suggest researching a bunch of benchmarks comparing the 970 and the 2600k. In most benches I've seen the 2600k wins even in heavy multitasking situations with HT on, and can also easily clock way farther than a 970 can.

Depends on which motherboard. A G.1 assassin can take a 990x to 5+ ghz, and this review was done by a Fellow OCN member.
Compare 5ghz 12 thread to 5ghz 8 threads.

Look at some benchmarks, 2600k will come out on top every time, it rivals and even exceeds the 980x is most applications too

Why isn't there a Gen 2 I7 hexacore? LOL! I'll keep doing my research, but I'm still completely undecided, 2 extra cores is a big deal, but equally so is clock speed... =/

How's the Maximus IV Extreme board when it comes to OCing?

That screen is fantastic by the way, I'll definitely upgrade to it!!
