Card Fan Speed

When using overclocking programs such as Afterburner, when overclocking your card for playing games, or just because, is it better to have the card on auto or set at a certain speed? Or does it vary depending on what your are doing?

i'd say its 50/50. I have enough fan noise as it is and leave it on auto, some swear the auto feature is fail and therefore manually set it.

I'd manually set it, since most auto settings just don't cover the right amount of fan percentage correctly.

I have my points set as follows with the curve and not step up grid.

40C-45%
50C-56%
60C-67%
70C-78%
80C-89%
90C-100%

I have very good temps even in instensive gaming situations. Crysis, Crysis 2, Rift all maxed settings and the card ratio per heat does very well keeping it down.

The main reason I ask is because the auto, as u said Arizonian, just seems off. When I was playing Starcraft II last nite, temps spiked up to about 67C w/ the fan speed at like 47 and climbing slowly. So I just set the speed to 70%, and it stayed cool, i think maxed 53C.

You can set up a custom profile in AB. I have mine so it's quiet at idle, and when I'm gaming with headphones then the fan is turned up automatically

If I was you set up the custom settings. I use EVGA Precision to do my fan work customized to this grid on a curve instead of a step up. You'll know as your card starts to heat up as your fan starts to take off while your gaming. I see you have an MSI card and you can use Afterburner. Just set up custom fan settings and check the 'start with windows start up' and 'start minimized' and you'll be good to go without thinking about it again. This way when your card cools down the fan isn't working as hard when it dosen't need to.

AZ can get pretty hot. I pay through the nose to keep my air at 77F in the summer months inside when it's 108F outside. May, June, Aug months are killer out here in the desert.

You do know how to set up your custom fan settings right?
