Some basic Qs about VGA overclocking

Thread Starter
I am rather new to GPU OC and I have something to ask, I got that bit regarding Core/Shaders to be raised slowly and proportionally and tested each time, but if I want to reach a higher clock, say 850 (out of the 783 factory overclocked), and I want to sustain it with the voltage, how much should I up the vCore? Which are the steps? 0.005v? 0.010v? 0.020v?

Also, I know every GPU performs different, but can someone give me some reference about voltage/clocks on GTX 580?

Moreover, I know that on SLI one should test each VGA separately, but since removing the lower one may be problematic, would it be enough to overclock one card at a time and leave the other on factory settings (in order to estabilish the maximum overclock for each card) or will I necessarily have to remove one card, test the other and viceversa? If I hit "Disable SLI" and OC the first card and test it, would it be the same as physically removing the other card?

Note: Sorry for reposting but no one on the other forum was able to answer me, at all. Maybe it wasn't the right forum I dunno.

bump up volts a tad at a time, and stress test. And last i knew, overclocking a card in sli, means it'll simply underclock to match slow card speeds.

in complete honesty i've never bumped up voltages on a card, but ive also never oc'd a card much, mainly cpu. for cpu, you go baby steps. google around for gainward gts 580 safe max voltages.

Safe max voltage is 1.1v while default is 1.0. I have no intention of exceeding safe voltage but on default voltage i can OC 17mhz out of them and I have a feeling that increasing voltage a bit may help stability. The only problem is that i cant quantify the aforementioned tad.

1. Disable SLI
2. Plug one monitor into each card.
3. Run stress test of choice focused on the monitor attached to the top card. Leave the other card in.
4. Find maximum overclock considering things like temperature/stability on the top card and note that.
5. Run stress test of choice focused on the monitor attached to the bottom card. Leave the top card in.
6. Find maximum overclock on the bottom card.
7. One card will probably overclock better than the other one. If so find the voltage that is required to run the other card at the speed of the one that doesn't overclock as well.
8. Enable SLI and re-run associated tests.

Note: If you only have one monitor then plug it into each card one at a time with SLI turned off to assess the stability of each card. I say to overclock the top one first because the top one will likely be the hotter card. You may end up wanting to switch the positions of the cards around.
